Calypso

Calypso

Tasmanian musician, Calypso, has just dropped her self-titled, debut EP.

Of the EP, Calypso says,

“I suppose the main themes behind the EP would be growth and change…whether that’s within a relationship or within oneself. I think it’s a reflection on how life is constantly moving, and you have to adapt to your surroundings and learn how to survive through the changes.

The EP is also about the push & pull of love, how we can connect with other people and how we can move apart from one another as well. I hope the EP can take the listener on a bit of a journey, as they connect and relate to the words and the music through their own personal experiences.”

Each track has been influenced by old and new music, and we’re pretty sure would include the following tracks in Calypso’s’ ‘Winter in Tassie’ playlist.

Elderbrook – Be There Soon
This is the type of song I can listen to over and over again and not get sick of, chilled relaxed vibes.

Mansionair – Hold Me Down
Just a nice song to listen to when I’m in a nice song kind of mood.

Cub Sport – Only Friend
This song makes me feel happy and sad at the same time.

Pavel Dovgal – Faust
I really like the strings in this song and the intensity of the music.

Les Loups – White Clips
I like the rise and falls and the chorus is catchy and easy to listen to.

Yacht – Psychic City
This songs puts me in a good mood when I’m cold and stuck in a Tassie winter.

Dream Koala – Odyssey
I love this guys voice and the way the song builds up at the end. Its just an all round beautiful song.

Bea – Filthy Believer
Good memories from this track, long tassie nights with music to keep us company.

Elderbrook x andhim – how many times
I put Elderbrook in here twice because I’ve only just discovered him and I think his music cool.

Ngaiire – Once
I saw Ngaiire playing the other night as part of the Festival of Voices and she was absolutely incredible.

Sounds like: London Grammar, Goldfrapp, Lucius, LKA, REMMI

Jean Jacket – Debut Album

JeanJacket Photo by Ates Isildak

Jean Jacket are a two piece rock/indietronica band from Miami, who have just released their eponymous debut album on 25th of March on Decades Records. The album is available to purchase now here.

The video for lead track ‘Super Party Cups’ takes us on a cinematic journey akin to Nicolas Winding Refn’s ‘Only God Forgives’, through a busy nightclub, full of desire intermixed with danger.
The track itself is a combination of pulsating 80’s synths, and 90’s industrial beat – the best of both worlds for a nostalgic type like me. There certainly seems to be a current trend towards this retro-influenced sound inline with similar emerging artists adopting it such as Ben Khan and Gesaffelstein.

‘Jean Jacket’ as a whole presents a very composed journey and structurally is near perfect – great entry into the indietronica scene and guaranteed to leave converts and new followers alike yearning for more…

Sounds like: TRUST, Thomas Azier, Ben Khan, Nine Inch Nails, MGMT, YACHT

Yacht – Plastic Soul

YACHT

YACHT

Fun-kids YACHT bring back summer with new track ‘Plastic Soul’.

Currently based in L.A. (but originally from Portland), the core group consists of Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans, but expands to include musicians Rob Kieswetter (aka Bobby Birdman) and Jeffrey Brodsky as touring members.

We haven’t seen much of YACHT since their last album ‘Shangri-La’ was released in 2011. However, this isn’t to say they haven’t been busy. Far from it, as they have been developing their own comedy sketch show based on “life on the rock n’ roll road, as seen through the eyes of its least glamorous participants: the opening band”.

YACHT have still found time to make a music video for ‘Plastic Soul’ and show that they continue to have more fun that us!

With the assistance of Buh and Power Violence, watch the $5K music video for ‘Plastic Soul’ below:

The track has been released via DFA Records.

Let’s hope another album is on its way…

Sounds like: Bobby Birdman, Shit Robot, Holy Ghost!, LCD Soundsystem, The Juan Maclean
