VILDE – Maintain

VILDE by Elin Ghersinich

Continuing with his monthly release schedule, VILDE, shares ‘Maintain’.

The music of VILDE – an innovative music project set up by Stockholm-based Thomas Savage, former member of Kins – is dutifully firm and ‘Maintain’ stands by that mentality with its racing drum beat and Savage’s claustrophobic vocals.

Elaborating on the themes behind ‘Maintain’, Vilde explains, “The subject matter of the song is somewhat of a crammed amalgamation of ideas. Part inspired by the film ‘Ace in the Hole’, where a news reporter begins to twist events in a dark way to gain fame through his portrayal of the story. There’s some pretty bleak imagery in the lyrics, yet bits of optimism seep through too, provoking a sense of solitude, release & calm.”

Live Dates

July 21 – Kantine Am Berghain, Berlin w/ Foreign/National
July 29 – Old Blue Last, London w/ Foreign/National

Sounds like: Wild Beasts, Spektor, Radiohead, Thomas Azier, James Blake, Ulrich Schnauss, TV on the Radio, BØRNS, Tim Hecker, Future Islands

Playlist: PATHS

PATHS

PATHS

Proving that there is nothing more powerful than a one woman show is UK indietronica artist, PATHS.

She has put together a playlist for us of her favourites. Enjoy!

Paths – Neoprene
Started with my own track, its just been released on 21st January, a proud moment for me, so hopefully giving people a taste straight away of who I am!

Thrash Hat – Pandaface
So Rory Friers aka Thrash Hat is actually my producer. In this song you can really hear essence of what he’s brought into not only my first release but future releases that you’ll here very soon! Cheers Rory!!

Jamie XX – The Rest is Noise
I absolutely love Jamie XXs album, I constantly play it, I’ve probably racked up the most of my Spotify listens, listening to his music! Its fresh, inventive, creative, yet makes you want to move. Its a big influence in my music, through the use of sampling, especially sampling natural sounds, and manipulating them into dance beats! This is maybe one of the lesser known tracks on this album, but one of my favs!

Santigold – Disparate Youth (The 2 Bears Remix)
I used to do a bit of DJ-ing at some local club nights, and I always found this went do well at the time Santigold was really getting a buzz and I think this was placed in a big advert at the time. The deep synth was bass in this is fab! Turn it up!

Vessels – Had a Love
Just a great chilled out dance vibe to this one. Love the texture of the vocals and the reverb throughout.

Bonobo – Kerala
I work as a programmer by day, and find Bonobo real feel good, motivating music to code to!!

TV on the Radio – DLZ
Awesome band, lots of sounds going on, a real dark gritty edge to this song, that really builds up. I found TV on the Radio a few years ago when looking for some indie DJ-ing music. Their track ‘Wolf like Me’ is also a big fav of mine.

Swim Deep – Honey
I don’t know what it is, but theres just something about this song. Its a real summery feel, its relaxing, its very cool, and I just love the chorus! Great band.

Her – Five Minutes
Saw this band at The Great Escape Festival last year, Just a really chilled out but catchy song.

Feist – My Moon, My Man
I’ve a lot of love for Feist, she really knows how to write a good song! I discovered this track through my DJ-ing, but it was actually the Boys Noize remix I was playing out, that is an excellent remix, check it out!

HAIM – If I Could Change Your Mind
GIRL POWER! – these girls are awesome, they are just genuine, down to earth, really really good musicians. Ive been trying to catch them live for a few years now. I love the catchiness of this track.

St. Vincent – Cruel
Again GIRL POWER! I saw St Vincent perform about 2 years ago at a big festival in Ireland, I was at the front and it was just awesome!!! Everything is performed perfectly, every quirky dance move, every single amazing riff she churns out of her guitar! A massive influence to me! Love she uses gritty distorted guitar effects, theres so few females down this style of music, its great to watch!

The xx – On Hold
From the The XX latest album, I’m really loving the new songs, and can really hear their progression in their style. I’ll be seeing them live in Munich next month!!! Cant wait!

Miike Snow – Genghis Khan
All Miike Snows stuff has been awesome. The had a big hit song that was in a big show in the UK a few years back, and I really got into his last album. Again its fresh innovative catchy music, they really know how to drive a song.

The xx – Loud Places
Just because I love Romys voice and Lyrics in this song. Again a real Jamie XX use of natural sound sampling, that I really love and also use in my own tracks.

Wasps – And So I Watch You From Afar
Again this is my producer Rory Friers full time band. They are a BEAST of a band live.
Their live shows, sweep you up, swirl you around, then spit you out, and leave you longing for me! Everyone should see them once in their lives!! They will be touring again this year, be there!

Anna Meredith – Scrimschaw
I saw Anna at The Great Escape Festival last year. It was the most innovative band I’ve seen in a long time. Its like she uses an instrumental band with a brass section to create proper dance music. Her live show was awesome, so tight, and really builds ya up. One to watch!

Foals – Albatross
I’ve listened and loved Foals since their first single was released. They were the energetic, fierce band I really needed at a time when I was loosing my musical direction. I’ve seen them live about 6 times now, from small packed out sweaty venues, to a massive headlining festival slot at Festival, when I was also playing the festival that year on the BBC Introducing stage. It was a real memorable moment for me.

Foals – Olympic Airways
An earlier foot-tapping song of Foals. Again foals really influenced my music right from my early demos of clean guitars with reverb and delay. You can’t help but nod your head to this one. The lyrics are pretty cool too.

Plant Perfecto – Not Over Yet 99
Ok so this is just a pure cheesy one to end with, this is a real classic, and I dare ya not to sing it!!!! Klaxons may have covered it, but this versions still the best for me!

Sounds like: Kate Nash, Lily Allen, HOLYCHILD

Yeasayer

Yeasayer returns with an awe-inspiring, spacey number called ‘I Am Chemistry’.

Telepathe – Drown Around Me

Telepathe

Telepathe

Telepathe (aka multi-instrumentalists Busy Gangnes and Melissa Livaudais) have quite a history.

The duo initially started recording music in 2006 by moving to a warehouse in Bushwick and recording their first EP ‘Farewell Forest’. This was followed in 2008 with their debut album ‘Dance Mother’, which they worked on with TV on the Radio‘s Dave Sitek.

They later quit their day jobs and relocated to Los Angeles to record the album in a few short and intense months. “Melissa and I decided to leave NY for a couple of months during the winter to write and record this new album,” Busy explains. “We rented an apartment on Sunset Boulevard. At the time we were reading a lot Science Fiction and researching California cults, which became themes that seeped into our music.”

Watch the effortlessly cool video for ‘Drown Around Me’ below:

The track has been taken from their long-awaited second album ‘Destroyer’. Co-produced with Lewis Pesacov and mixed by Matty Green, the girls have started their own label BZML to release their album on their own terms.

Sounds like: Ballet School, Monogem, Madonna, LCD Soundsystem, Tom Vek, Rilo Kiley

Aaron – Interview

Aaron - Letters to Jonny

Aaron – Letters to Jonny

Dreampop princess Aaron has released her ‘Letters to Jonny’ EP.

We featured track two from the EP, ‘Strong‘, a while back and caught up with Aaron to find out some more about life and music…

How and why did you start making music?

I started songwriting at 15, not taking it seriously at all. My grandfather is an incredible jazz musician and inspired me to start creating my own music. After leaving school being an artist was the only thing that seemed engaging to me and so I decided to do it.

Describe your sound in three words.

Awesome alternative pop.

Where do you cite your musical influences from?

All over, I grew up on Alt rock and jazz music, artists like TV on the Radio and Miles Davis. My mother was obsessed with early 80s Madonna and Kate Bush and I think that definitely shows in my own work.

There is a lot of other female electronic artists out there. How do you differentiate yourself?

I’m glad you asked that because as an artist I don’t believe I am bound by genre, it’s my writing style that defines me. My next project is far less electronic than ‘Letters to Jonny’.

We love new music at Indietronica. What new music are you listening to?

Alabama Shakes‘s new album ‘Sound & Colour’ I absolutely love! Shura is incredible too, I can’t wait for her album. Also a bit late to the party but I’ve had Mac DeMarco‘s ‘Salad Days’ on repeat like crazy.

What is next for you? Are you planning a tour?

I’m straight back in the studio working on my next project, which will be coming out towards the end of summer ’15. I’ll be touring after that for sure.

Have a listen to the EP in full below:

Sounds like: Nina, Paperwhite, Broods, Monogem, M83, VÉRITÉ, Evvy, Pawws, College, Noosa
