Young Empires – The Gates

Young Empires

Young Empires

Young Empires is Matthew Vlahovich, Jacob Palahnuk and Taylor Hill from Toronto.

Despite new single ‘The Gates’ sounding like a sparkling melodic indie track, it has a deeper meaning for the trio, who describe the track as being “…essentially about fighting through depression and self-doubt… understanding and accepting that things will never be perfect. It suggests that by uniting with those around us (that may or not struggle with same), we can overcome this feeling of isolation that is so commonplace in this world.”

The track is produced by Stephen Kozmeniuk (Kendrick Lamar, The Game, Hurts).

Sounds like: The Hurts, Sir Sly, Pistol Shrimp, Gypsy & The Cat, Brotherun, Temper Trap, Dive In, Satellite Stories, Young Kato, Ghost Beach

For Esmé - Just Yet

For Esmé – Just Yet

For Esmé is Toronto-based band that is giving us some real deep electronica feelings right now.

The band consists of three friends, Martha, Nathan and Dave, who all met through a mutual friend.

Dave filled in last minute for a show in Montreal and enjoyed playing with For Esmé so much that he packed his stuff into the tour van the next morning and moved to Toronto.

The echoey vocals from Martha on their debut track ‘Just Yet’ are accompanied by lush pulsating beats. The track has been co-produced by James Bunton.

Lowell – I Love You Money

Lowell Photo Credit: by Norman Wong

A classically trained musician, Toronto-based singer Lowell suffers from a rare neurological condition known as synaesthesia which causes her to process sound as colours thus having a huge influence on her music and visions.

Despite the fun and chaotic video for ‘I Love You Money’, Lowell writes to empower herself as much as her listeners. Lyrics openly tackle sexual abuse, rape, abortion, and women’s rights. She stridently addresses the lack of LGBT rights in our society as well the ignorance about (and simultaneous obsession with) homosexuality.

Lowell releases her debut album ‘We Loved Her Dearly’ in the UK on 9 March through Arts & Crafts.

Sounds like: M.I.A, Dena, Ji Nilsson, Santigold, Mark Ronson, Icona Pop

La+ch – Nights

Following a hiatus, the Canadian EDM producer, La+ch has teamed up with fellow Canadian Dustbuster to release latest track, ‘Nights’.

The track takes more of a soulful M83-esque direction with falsetto lyrics and more of a slow paced, and synthy beat.

With the pair promising more new music in the coming weeks, in addition to their production contributions to upcoming new releases from fellow sideways members, Coleman Hell and Shan Vincent de Paul (SVDP), this production team is quickly becoming prolific within dance and indie music circles.

The track is taken from the new EP, which has an anticipated due date of 4 November.

Sounds like: Fenech-Soler, Young The Giant, M83, Pistol Shrimp, Passion Pit, Miike Snow
