One of our ones to watch for 2019 is Wild Moccasins, a beautifully crafted band fronted by the magnificent Zahira Gutierrez with her notable soaring pop melodies.

Playlist: Glassio

Meet Glassio, the alt-pop project of Sam Rad and Charlie P.

Glassio have put together a playlist for us about the influences behind their recent atmospheric cover of Iggy & The Stooges‘ ‘Search & Destroy’.

You can listen to/find out more below.

“These are 11 songs that played a role in influencing our production of “Search & Destroy,” and that we still often reference when working on new music.

Individually, there might not be much in common with the cover, but there are elements from each that either exist in the cover or that we had on our mind when working on the track.

Most notably is the idm-electro inspired cover of “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out,” by German producer Schneider TM –originally performed by The Smiths. That served as a specific influence by taking something from one genre and fitting it into another.

I (Sam) have also been listening to a lot of UK garage and 2-step lately. Sticky is one of my favorite producers in that area, and the song we’ve included on here, “War Rhythm” played a big part in influencing a portion of the beat in the cover.

Lately, we’ve both been digging deep into old Philly soul, MFSB, and then lots of 90s and early 2000s R&B. That’s been having a major comeback lately, and you can hear it all over the Chance album. The voices on “Same Drugs” are particularly uplifting, and we wanted our voices in the gospel section of our cover to resemble the same mood.

“Heartbeats” by Joakim and “Transformer Man” by Neil Young are both basically singer-songwriter songs performed through vocoders, and that idea was really attractive to us, so we added that very faintly in the vocals on the first verse.

Our cover ends with a Beach Boys-inspired ending, emanating the trapped feeling that the vocals at the end of “’Til I Die” give off.

The playlist also starts off with a song by a former classmate of ours at Clive Davis. We never spoke in person, but his album is pretty fantastic, and definitely removes you from your current headspace with lots of controlled and orchestrated noise-rock. We wanted the ending of our song to have that same feeling.”

HUNNY is a South Californian band, who like to create sweet blends of 80’s pop punk. They cite their influences from the likes of Prince and The Cure.

Their debut EP ‘Pain/Ache/Loving’ was produced with Eric Palmquist (Bad Suns, Trash Talk). The result is a lovelorn themed EP that paints a colourful picture of heartbreak and frustration through angst driven anthems.

After the success of the infectious and lauded ‘Heartracer‘, the Cosby boys are staying on trend and returning with 80’s synth tune ‘Overboard’.

The youthful track is short but sweet. Close your eyes and envisage listening to ‘Overboard’ in your dream sports car with the top down and wind in hair.

The track was released on 22 April and is taken from the ‘Summer Gold’ EP.

For fans of Bon Iver and Deptford Goth looking for something slightly different, meet twenty-two year old Icelandic singer/songwriter, Ásgeir (aka Ásgeir Trausti Einarsson).

Ásgeir’s debut album, ‘Dyrd í dauðathogn’ was mostly written by his 72 year old father and became so popular in his home country, 10% of the Icelandic population is estimated to own a copy.

The English-language version of the album (‘In The Silence’) was translated by John Grant.

BALLET SCHOOL

Ballet School

Berlin-based Ballet School is Irish Rosie Blair on vocals/guitar, Japanese-Brazilian Michel Collet on lead guitar and Louis McGuire on drums.

Blair and Collet met two years ago in Berlin when Blair heard Collet playing his guitar in the U-bahn. Sharing their love of the Cocteau-Twins, she immediately asked him to form a band. In 2012 they began collaborating with McGuire.

A mélange of ’80s pop and R’N’B is always at the forefront of the band’s agenda.

Berndsen (aka David Berndsen) is a bearded iconic figure in Iceland and regularly works with Hermigervill; one of Iceland’s most notable producers.

Her music can be described as a contemporary mix of twinkling, ‘Lucky-Star’-era Madonna with the bedroom-R&B grooves of Blood Orange, filtered through a haze of Balearic synths and swirling, Warpaint-inspired guitars.

Cosby – Heartracer

Time for some super dreamy 80’s inspired synth pop from up-and-coming Cosby.

Led by Richmond-based brothers Chris and Chip Cosby with Mike Levinson on drums/percussion, ‘Heartracer’ is the first single off their forthcoming record.

The boys describe the track as being about “that moment when we finally feel at ease with the realization that we are all, for better or worse, heading in the same direction on this big floating rock in space we call Earth.”

Having already opened for Future Islands and finished as a semi-finalist in last year’s International Songwriting Competition, Cosby is definitely one to watch!

Suzuki Method – Sherbet

Suzuki Method

Let us introduce you to Salford’s indie dance five-piece, Suzuki Method, who are brothers and founders, Adam and Glen Leishman; Michael Mathews; David Boyd; and Ben Hounslow.

The band came together during the Salford riots to create their debut EP ‘Native’, which is produced by David Tolan (Delphic, Primal Scream) and Jim Spencer (The Doves, The Vaccines, New Order)

Mixing up a concoction of classic post punk vocals with some indie swagger, the clear musical influences from the well-known above producers give Suzuki Method their distinctive, yet mature electronic sound. Suzuki Method also cite influences from other such bands as Daft Punk and The Smiths, as can be heard in their anthemic ‘we dare-you-not-to-dance’ screaming guitar lines.

The video for lead single ‘Sherbet’ was directed by Bafta film maker Pete Travis (Omagh, Vantage Point, Judge Dredd) who agreed to do so after seeing the band perform at London’s Barfly. Set on the Manchester rooftops, it is a fast paced and beautifully shot affair. The preview for the video is at The Black Lion in Manchester on 12 October 2013.

Sherbet’s jangling guitars provide a pitch perfect soundtrack to vocalist Adam’s forlorn tale of youth in crisis:

Suzuki Method are tipped for big things, having received BBC introducing, Amazing radio and XFM airplay.

The debut EP is released on 20 October 2013 via A1(M) Records.
