TEEN RAVINE – Hall of Horrors

Teen Ravine

Toronto’s Teen Ravine (Nick Rose and Dan Griffin) share the John Smith-directed video for ‘Hall Of Horrors’, a melancholic track about feeling lost and reaching out for someone who’s no longer there.

This dreamy song is ironically about nightmares – running around in circles, trapped in a fuzzy lovesick state surrounded by a “mirrored hall of horrors”.

Sounds like: The Carpenters, The Avalanches, Chet Faker, The Japanese House

Marble Empire – OMEGA

Marble Empire

UK artist Marble Empire (aka Matt Berry) has been making music since 13. You’d therefore expect his new single ‘OMEGA’ to be relatively complex, despite Marble Empire being reasonably new to the music scene, and you wouldn’t be wrong.

The song – written about progressing from adolescence into adulthood and the future of young people – was actually written two years ago, but despite the nostalgia, it is evermore relevant today than ever.

Omega by Marble Empire on VEVO.

Belle Mt. – Hollow

Mt Belle.

The sad tone continues in this SubmitHub feature with Belle Mt.‘s new single ‘Hollow’.

Belle Mt. (pronounced ‘Belle Mont’) will definitely tug at your heartstrings with this one – sky-high vocals and scene-setting strings.

Belle Mt. explain, “There’s the impression of a fork in the road for this woman and ultimately she takes the tragic path, as she can’t accept the intimacy or love that this man is committed to giving. Hollow is as much about her loneliness as his eventual emptiness…”

M83 – Go! feat Mai Lan

M83

M83

M83 (aka Anthony Gonzalez) makes a huge return with ‘Go!’, another track taken from his ‘JUNK’ album, out today via Naive.

Taking more of a Mark Ronson spin on things, ‘Go!’ is an exultant synth pop charmer that features lead vocals from French chanteuse Mai Lan, and a funky guitar solo by virtuoso Steve Vai.

Gonzalez describes the collaboration with Vai: “We asked for the craziest space solo possible, which wasn’t hard for him. He sent us three different takes, and we blended two to make the ultimate Steve Vai solo. It was amazing to work with him.”

An amalgamation of sounds, M83 is once again one step ahead on all levels of music innovation.

Sounds like: Foals, Mark Ronson, Prince, Harts, The Carpenters, Washed Out, The Naked and Famous, Thomas Azier

Hans Island – Break Free

Hans Island - Break Free

Hans Island – Break Free

Hans Island is the new collective project of Canadian producer Mawhs and recently Scandinavian Soul Awards nominated singer Marie Dahlstrøm.

Working miles apart doesn’t restrict a flow of ideas between the two, and ‘Break Free’ proves just this. The release is a minimalistic R&B-influenced track with an unusually upbeat vibe, courtesy of Marie’s falsetto vocals full of nostalgia.

‘Break Free’ is available from today on their self-titled EP.

Lucius – Madness

Lucius by Piper Ferguson

Lucius by Piper Ferguson

Sometimes you listen to a song, and it instantly takes you. This seems to be a frequent occurrence whilst listening to any song by the female duo-led Lucius (aka Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig).

Lucius have yet again ramped it up on their new release called ‘Madness’; the second track off their new album ‘Good Grief’, which is out on 11 March via Play It Again Sam. It has a greater level of maturity than previous releases, and we adore the new addition of strings, reminiscent of Roxette‘s ‘Wish I Could Fly’)

The album has been co-produced with Shawn Everett (WeezerThe Alabama Shakes) and Bob Ezrin (Alice Cooper, Kiss, Pink Floyd), and mixed by Tom Elmhirst (Adele and Beck).

Of Good Grief, vocalist Jess Wolfe says, “When we started writing for this record, we had been away from home for nearly two years. We had just returned from tour, having gone through such varied emotions—loneliness, sadness and exhaustion alongside excitement, fulfillment and some of the most joyful moments in our lives…Whenever one of us had an idea or a feeling, the other was already a witness to it and could help navigate through it—for the two of us, this usually came in song form.” Vocalist Holly Laessig adds, “…When considering titles, we wanted to be sure to acknowledge any serious subject matter, while simultaneously allowing ourselves a comic sigh of relief from any personal turmoil. Ha! The yin and yang of the record naturally unveiled itself and, so, Good Grief.”

Amason – Went To War

Amason

Amason

Pontus Winnberg (Miike Snow), Gustaf Ejstes (Dungen), Nils Törnqvist and Petter Winnberg (Little Majorette), and Amanda Hollingby Matsson (Idiot Wind) form supergruppen Amason.

Despite the Swedish background, the band are situated in L.A. and are turning out to be the best supergroup of 2013.

Super catchy tune, ‘Went to War’, features on their debut EP, which was released on 28 August 2013 on Stockholm-based label/artist collective INGRID.

The track continues with the 70s synth rock theme prominent throughout the EP and we especially like the soft beats layered underneath the female/male vocal interplay, similar to that of fellow Swedes Peter Bjorn and John.

Citing influences from Kraftwerk, think of the group as a indietronica version of The Carpenters.

Sounds like: Peter Bjorn and John, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Carpenters, Miike Snow
