Using space as a reference (specifically the NASA recording of Saturn’s rings), ‘Somedays’ showcases BATTS’ knack of creating psych-tinged pop that is extremely grounding, but also feels otherworldly at the same time.

Lake Jons -Call Me

Lake Jons

Following on from the brilliant ‘Colors‘, Finnish trio Lake Jons release ‘Call Me’.

Once again ethereal vocals clash and blend with tinny drums. We can’t help but think severe isolation in the woods is the way forward – it really does produce inspirational music!

Expect their forthcoming self-titled debut album to come out on 19 January through AntiFragile Music.

Sounds like: Midlake, Band Of Horses, Paul Simon, Ásgeir, Bon Iver, Nick Mulvey

MTNS – Waves

MTNS - Waves

Brisbane-based trio MTNS release ‘Waves’.

The electronic production reflects the title of the track as the bass lines roll over you like waves in the ocean…or much like positive and negative aspects of life hitting you one at a time.

MTNS say of the track, “‘Waves’ is about how we experience different stages in life, with a specific focus on relationships. It’s based on how love can help us overcome things, and work through the ups and downs we often find ourselves in.”

Expect their ‘Like A Stone’ EP out soon.

Stalgia – Talk To My Skin

Stalgia - Talk To My Skin

Stalgia seem to be channeling the provactive nature of Banks more and more, and we are definitely not complaining.

Their new single ‘Talk To My Skin’ is our favourite yet – hypnotising vocals repeat as a dirty synth line moans throughout the track until an ultimate climax at the end, resulting in both an inner and outer body musical experience.

Sounds like: Banks, IYES, SOHN, Liv Dawson, Lyves, Harper, LYROE

Inner Tongue – Dig Deeper

Inner Tongue by HELMUT BERGER

Inner Tongue is a solo project that almost didn’t happen.

In 2013, its exponent was diagnosed with a vocal cord disorder so severe that only a handful of specialists throughout the entire world were capable of treating it. He worked day and night to raise the funds necessary to pay for the required operation, followed by a period of silence.

Luckily the procedure worked and the result is a vocal tone that fits somewhere in-between Tame Impala and SOHN.

The video for ‘Dig Deeper’ is like a party, and even includes footage of Inner Tongue dancing to David Bowie records.

Much like the project, there is a little confusion about where the track might take you as gentle jazz drums lead you into a false sense before it takes a moodier, more electronic turn towards its end.

‘Dig Deeper’ is taken from Inner Tongue’s forthcoming debut album, which will be released early next year.

Sounds like: Tame Impala, Phoenix, Chet Faker, The Weeknd, SOHN

BATTS – For Now

BATTS

BATTS is the project of Australian-based artist Tanya Batt.

Cue the beautiful video for their ambient track, ‘For Now’, which has used free footage from NASA’s archives.

“The aim of this song was to try and sonically create a feeling of floating through space, so naturally BATTS wanted to pair it with space footage and spent many hours going through space footage and nasa archives to find footage she felt suited.”

Sounds like: London Grammar, Ficci, GEMS, MS MR, Daughter, James Blake, Jon Hopkins, MØ, SOHN, Broods, M83

Fyfe – Belong (Feat. Kimbra)

FYFE

Fyfe is the musical project of Paul Dixon, and he returns with a seriously strong new track called ‘Belong’, featuring Kimbra.

It is the first single taken off Fyfe’s second album ‘The Space Between’, which is released on 9 June. The concept behind the album is it begins in a hospital ward and ends at a funeral home.

‘Belong’ was written following Paul’s experience with the separate and sudden deaths of two young friends, then his grandmother passing away, and very quickly a family friend, but also him becoming an uncle three times.

Fyfe describes ‘Belong’ as,

“the desire to find purpose in a transient life. A relationship can be helpful or a hinderance in terms of understanding who you are and ‘Belong’ is documenting someone starting to pose those questions, rather than providing the answers…Kimbra is a real creative force. Our voices are presenting the same narrative rather than a conversation between two members of a relationship.”

Fyfe will be playing a headline show at London’s Omeara on 4 May.

Sounds like: RALPH, Miike Snow, Boxed In, James Blake, Childish Gambino, SOHN, The XX, Ellie Goulding, Bombay Bicycle Club, Death Cab For Cutie, London Grammar, Foals

Apsley - Fear

We wrote about Idaho-based Apsley (aka Jacob Apsley) earlier this year and we’re excited to share his latest release, ‘Fear’.

The track has more of an demanding tone than Sold, reminding us of an early The 1975 with its muted guitar riffs and echoey, falsetto vocals.
