Máni Orrason – Numb

Máni Orrason

Máni Orrason by Yannic Pöpperling

We are huge fans of quirky Icelandic electro-pop provacateur Máni Orrason‘s new single ‘Numb’. In fact, we are slightly obsessed with all of the visuals for his last few releases, portraying a broken yet endearing persona of desperation and a need for love.

The visuals for ‘Numb’ flashback to straying and emotional neglect, “I had this desperate need to be seen and to be comforted. I guess i was really lonely at the time”, Máni recalls.

The EP ‘BABY ANGEL’ is out now via Humming Records.

Sounds like: The 1975, Shy Luv

Sugarcane – Bethnal Green Blues

Sugarcane

Comprised of Robin French (Cuckoo) and Antonia Thomas (Misfits, Lovesick), these two creatives write seductive bossa nova music paired with calypso pop sensibilities that would fit well on the soundtrack of ‘The End of the F***ing World’.

On the motivation behind Bethnal Green Blues, Robin states,

“Sometimes you write a sad song from a happy moment. This came to me while I was flying to South America to see a girl I’d fallen for. It’s about the emotional ice age after a romance fails, but it was written as that ice melted under the Argentine sun..”

Sounds like: Nouvelle Vague, Men I Trust

Dancing On Tables by Lucy Foster-0009

We love an indie anthem, so thank you to five-piece pop-rock, Dancing On Tables.

Gavin Haley – Sad Season

Gavin Haley

From summer season to ‘Sad Season’ with former professional cyclist Gavin Haley‘s latest single.

While competing with the national cycling team, Haley suffered an injury that resulted in a collapsed lung, setting back his travel by several months. During his recovery, he explored and found inspiration in Europe’s underground music scene, becoming enamored with energetic live performances filled with a grit and energy.

ROYAL – Vessel

ROYAL

Canadian songstress ROYAL debuts with ‘Vessel’, the first of six new tracks that appear on her upcoming album, ‘Heart of Shadows’.

Covering the topic of heartbreak, loss of identity and raw self-reflection, this is electro-pop at its finest in 2018.

Speaking about ‘Vessel,’ ROYAL says,

“This song is about heartbreak – having to let go of someone you love, and then realizing the emptiness and loss of identity that ensues. I wrote this song it while trying to find myself after getting lost within a relationship for many years and then feeling shattered by the loss of a love I thought would last a lifetime.”

Von Sell – Scene Of A Crime

Von Sell

Last but not least, our favourite breakthrough act – self-taught producer, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Von Sell.

After a bout of vocal pain and subsequent treatment, we are pleased to say that Von Sell is on the mend and returning to our stereos with ‘Scene OF A Crime’.

Taken from his forthcoming sophomore EP, ‘Digital Sleep’, the song reflects on unrequited love, but, due to its uptempo nature, it will ultimately leave a taste of confusion in your mouth because you can’t help but dance despite the disconcerting subject matter.

Sounds like: Summer Heart, Hazel English, Teen Daze, Peter Gabriel, Alt-J, Thomas Azier

Patawawa – Patagonia

Patawawa

Patawawa share the bright and infectious video for ‘Patagonia’.

When we first heard the single earlier in the year, we thought the trio were from Paris and not Derbyshire, but it seems we are not the only ones to see this connection – the video has fittingly been created by one of France’s hottest illustrators and animators, Regards Coupables.

Watch below.

Sounds like: Shy Luv, Calvin Harris, Two Door Cinema Club

Facebook | Twitter | SoundCloud | Instagram

Playlist: Patawawa

Patawawa

Patawawa is an exciting British trio. The group create infectious disco for a modern nation.

With a number of blood-pumping releases so far – all of which we can’t stop listening to – we figured we’d pick their brains and ask them for their musical inspirations. It’s an eclectic mix!

RORY’S PICKS

Crazy P – One True Light

Crazy P have had songs in most of my playlists for years now and this one from last year was exactly what I hoped for in a new release from them.

Don Raye – Standing in the Rain

This is one song that I knew I loved the first time I listened to it, all the spacey noises in the background with the disco instrumentation just made it a instant classic for me.

Gabriel Garzón-Montano – Crawl

Slow songs are few and far between in my music library, but this has something really nice about it, He’s got some other great songs but this is the one that I’ve been listening to a lot recently.

Jad & the – Strings That Never Win

There’s just something about a simple sample with a house beat that appeals to me massively and this song is a perfect example of that.

BETH’S PICKS

Kate Bush – Running Up That Hill

I absolutely love 80’s pop music and this song is the epitome of that genre for me. Its such a ‘cool’ song and its an absolute belter to sing along to.

Fela Kuti – Zombie

Afrobeat is the best music to dance to and also the best music to clean to! Vivd memories of dancing/cleaning my way round the house, and because its 12 mins long you feel like you’re getting a lot of song for your money.

Tensnake – Holding Back (My Love)

This is a great song anyway but when the guitar riff kicks in at the end, oh man, I cant help but get up and start shaking my ass, it’s a disgusting spectacle, but the song’s just too good.

SAM’S PICKS

Rex Orange County – Loving is Easy

I heard this song sometime around December last year and had it stuck in my head for a solid week and was playing it at every opportunity. Such a simple, brilliant song, I’m looking forward to hearing more from him this year!

Benny Sings – Rebuilding The Omega Man

I had couple of songs on my playlist from him (remixes I think) and then one day recently I thought I’d check out his stuff and was super happy I did! This is an absolute banger and I’ve found several more just as good!

Patrice Rushen – Let The Music Take Me

I got into listening to Disco pretty young, but I think again it was Rory who introduced me to Patrice Rushen. I love a lot of her stuff but have been playing this one a lot recently, just a proper feel good tune, a proper Disco banger!

Feist – Inside & Out

Rory first played me this song maybe about a year or so ago, and then it recently popped up in my Discover Weekly playlist on Spotify and it has been great listening to it again. I love the chorus, such as beautiful voice with lovely lyrics and I love that synth! Very good tune indeed!

Liv Dawson – Hush

I discovered Liv Dawson in 2017, really with the help of Spotify! I loved her track ‘Searching’ and then she followed it up with this track, ‘Hush’. I think its a really cool song and her vocals work so well on it! It was also produced by Disclosure, so that’s a thumbs up from me!

Like what you hear? Check them out one of the upcoming live dates below:

22 Feb – Leeds, The Lending Room
27 Feb – London, The Sebright Arms
19 Apr – Sheffield, Mulberry Bar and Tavern
20 Apr – London, Camden Assembly

Sounds like: Shy Luv, Calvin Harris, Two Door Cinema Club

Shy Luv – Lungs

Shy Luv - Lungs

Shy Luv is the project of Manchester based Karma Kid and Armeria.

The video for their new single, ‘Lungs’ is directed by HUMANS and produced by CANADA. Shot in a Mars-like red clay quarry, it illustrates the songs overriding theme of wanting to re-tract an open offer of love to your object of desire who’s feelings aren’t openly reciprocated, and works perfectly with the track’s spacey production depicting such nostalgic moments.

The ‘Lungs’ EP is out now and the guys play The Courtyard Theatre in London on 14 December. Get tickets here.

Sounds like: Patawawa, Roosevelt, Cut Copy, Ten Fé, Honne, Disclosure, Tame Impala, Hot Chip, Jagwar Ma, SG Lewis

Alexx Mack - Your Car

After a brief hiatus, Alexx Mack returns to our stereos with her latest release ‘Your Car’, featuring EXES.
