Keyes is a Warwickshire-based 18 year old who has just released her second track, ‘Poor Man’s Paradise’.

Interview with Gemology

Gemology - First & Last

Gemology – First & Last

New synth-pop ladies on the block, GEMOLOGY, is Natasha Chitayat and Joanie Wolkoff. The debut track ‘First & Last’ dances with our emotions whilst offering up glimmers of 80’s-inspired pearlescent beats.

The duo agreed to have a chat with us…

You are both from Brooklyn. Is that where you met?
Joanie’s a born and raised Torontonian and Natasha is a Child of the City (Manhattan’s West Village) but our ‘headquarters’ are now in Brooklyn, where Joanie has planted her flag.

Actually, this duo is currently in a bi-coastal long distance relationship, (Natasha recently headed for the greener pastures of LA), but an NYC reunion is imminent. Until then, we’ll be like Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer’s characters in the 1985 medieval fantasy film Ladyhawke- we can only simultaneously be in the same location as our human selves during a solar eclipse. Natasha’s the hawk, obvi.

Gemology is the study of the science of gems. How did you decide on the name Gemology?
Who isn’t enticed by GEMS? They’re precious, look delicious and could theoretically stand in for cash currency under apocalyptic conditions (after, like, food and weapons).

GEMOLOGY loves making music and duvets and puppies but we’re also basically doomsday preppers. If the shit hits the fan, we’ll be the ones with a bunker/rubber raft/seed library at the ready. GEMS are survivors, and the ones who stick out.

Which gem would you be and why?
Natasha: I’ve been known to do a pretty mean t-rex impression, so I think dinosaur bones are calling out to me.

Joanie: A certain rapper once described emeralds as “So far from clear cause they resemble frozen lettuce.” So emeralds.

Describe your sound in 3 words.
Bittersweet, sensual, melodic.

Are there plans for a tour?
Something might be brewing.

We love new music at Indietronica. What new music are you listening to?
Natasha: Ryn Weaver, Wet, Fickle Friends.

Joanie: Night Slugs, Rae Sremmurd.

Sounds like: Fickle Friends, Wet, Ryn Weaver, Monogem, Paperwhite, LANY, Broods, Evvy, Noosa, First Aid Kit
