Ryan Egan – Finest Hour

Ryan Egan

Ryan Egan

Another cracking track from Ryan Egan. This one is called ‘Finest Hour’, and we are pretty sure this is Ryan’s finest musical hour to date.

While previous releases have seen Egan share production with Luca Buccellati (Tei Shi), ‘Finest Hour’ see’s Egan take on full production duties.

The result a glistening pop track full of 80’s vibes.

Sounds like: Ben Khan, Tei Shi, The Ugly Club, Twin Shadow, Jai Paul, JUNGLE, Shy Girls

Hunny – Vowels (and The Importance of Being Me)

HUNNY

HUNNY

HUNNY is a South Californian band, who like to create sweet blends of 80’s pop punk. They cite their influences from the likes of Prince and The Cure.

Their debut EP ‘Pain/Ache/Loving’ was produced with Eric Palmquist (Bad Suns, Trash Talk). The result is a lovelorn themed EP that paints a colourful picture of heartbreak and frustration through angst driven anthems.

Listen to ‘Vowels (and The Importance of Being Me)’ below.

Sounds like: Temper Trap, The Wild Wild, Blossoms, Young Empires, The Smiths, Twin Wave, The Island Club

M83 – Go! feat Mai Lan

M83

M83

M83 (aka Anthony Gonzalez) makes a huge return with ‘Go!’, another track taken from his ‘JUNK’ album, out today via Naive.

Taking more of a Mark Ronson spin on things, ‘Go!’ is an exultant synth pop charmer that features lead vocals from French chanteuse Mai Lan, and a funky guitar solo by virtuoso Steve Vai.

Gonzalez describes the collaboration with Vai: “We asked for the craziest space solo possible, which wasn’t hard for him. He sent us three different takes, and we blended two to make the ultimate Steve Vai solo. It was amazing to work with him.”

An amalgamation of sounds, M83 is once again one step ahead on all levels of music innovation.

Sounds like: Foals, Mark Ronson, Prince, Harts, The Carpenters, Washed Out, The Naked and Famous, Thomas Azier

Interview with The Hunna

The Hunna

The Hunna

Hertfordshire four-piece The Hunna is causing quite a stir in the music world.

We caught up with the guys following their recent tour with Coasts, and discussed hip hop and rock influences, as well as what it was like working with Tim Larcombe (Lana Del Rey, Halsey) and Dan Grech (Wolf Alice, Circa Waves).

How did you meet and why did you start making music together?

We’ve all been close friends and brothers for a while now. Daniel Dorney (Bandana Dan) and Ryan Potter (Valentino) met in music college 6 years ago pursuing the goal of making great music. Jack Metcalfe (Insta King) also went to the same college a few years before. Jermaine Angin (The Prince) has known Bandana Dan since primary school and learnt how to play the guitar together since secondary school. There’s always been a connection between us even though we all met at different times in our lives. After our first rehearsal together 2 years ago we all knew that this was something really special and almost like it was meant to be. Our love and appreciation for music is something that we can’t put into words, the feeling that we have when playing together is the reason why we started and why we will continue making music together!

Where did the name The Hunna come from?

We all have a big hip hop / rap influence so it originated from that. We believe in keeping it 1hunna in everything we do.

Describe your sound in three words.

Turn Up Rock.

You worked with Tim Larcombe and Dan Grech on ‘Bonfire’. What was it like working with them?

It was a privilege to work with Tim Larcombe. He understood our vision and got to know us on a personal level really quickly which helped in the work environment and was a big reason why ‘Bonfire’ sounds like it does. We can safely say that Tim is a 1hunna guy and a true professional at what he does. He’s a true Hunna squad member! We admire Dan Grech’s roster and the work that he has produced. He was a pleasure to work with and brought a unique element to the track

Where do you cite your musical influences from?

Kings Of Leon
Foals
Kanye West
Marvin Gaye
Queen
Michael Jackson
Bob Marley
Prince
Drake

We love new music at Indietronica. What new music are you listening to?

Rae Sremmurd
Kendrick Lamar
Wiz Khalifa
Yung Simmie
Dr Dre
Led Zeppelin
AC-DC
The Weeknd
Willow and Jaden Smith
Frank Ocean
Chief Keef

The 1975 – Love Me

The 1975

The 1975

Our favourite guilty pleasures, The 1975, have cranked it up a notch with 80’s funk tune ‘Love Me’.

Remaining pretty illusive about their new releases, we are excited to finally watch the video for the new track.

From black and white into a tint of pink, this is definitely a satirical pop video with frontman Matt Healy speaking out about how he really feels on things.

Order tickets for their March tour here.

Sounds like: INXS, Prince, Harts

Love Ssega – Minds

Love Ssega

Love Ssega

Love Ssega releases ‘Minds’.

Some of you with a keen ear may recognise Ssega’s vocals. He was featured on Clean Bandit‘s ‘Mozart’s House’, which he also co-wrote as a former member of the band, following his time at Cambridge University where he studied chemical engineering.

It seems Ssega has also found some time to extensively study a decent tune. ‘Minds’ cleverly channels a mix of New Wave, 80s hip-hop and NYC disco into smart modern pop.

He is signed to Hometown/Sony.

Sounds like: Talking Heads, LCD Soundsystem, Tom Tom Club, Kindness, LA Priest, Prince

Xan Young – Passion

Xan Young

Xan Young

There is a new kid joining the electro-soul world, and he’s one that we are particularly excited about.

Xan Young, with similarities to Ben Khan, releases his debut track ‘Passion’. It is built on quivering synths and obscure percussion…and the simplicity is beautiful.

We expect his debut record, ‘The Flood’, to be released in August via Astro Nautico.

Sounds like: Ben Khan, Years & Years, Leo Kalyan, Twin Shadow, Jai Paul, JUNGLE, Disclosure, Prince, Blood Orange, Harts, Oyinda, Shy Girls, Harriet

Ben Khan – Zenith

Ben Khan

Ben Khan

A year a go today, we wrote about rising Brit, Ben Khan.

Flash forward one year and hot on the footsteps of Ben’s recent release of ‘1000’, is his latest victory, ‘Zenith’.

A powerful three minute track full of claustrophobic sci-fi blues, wounded guitar squiggles, crunchy synths and a soulful cascading chorus hook.

Ben recently announced his first headline live dates in the UK and Europe with most of the shows quickly selling out. This is one artist in demand.

His new EP follows last years successful and acclaimed debut ‘1992 EP’ which introduced Ben’s inventive brand of swampy electronic R&B and funk, mangled blues soul, and icy hip-hop beats.

Sounds like: Leo Kalyan, Twin Shadow, Jai Paul, JUNGLE, Disclosure, Prince, Blood Orange, Harts, Oyinda, Shy Girls

Ben Khan – 1000

Ben Khan - 1000

Ben Khan – 1000

Before we heard Ben Khan‘s new track, ‘1000’, we knew it would be good. And it hasn’t disappointed.

Perfection comes in all shapes and sizes. It’s a sporadic, feel good masterpiece and those vocals. Those. vocals.

Taken from a forthcoming EP of the same name, ‘1000’ will be released on 11 May via Ben’s imprint Blessed Vice and features four brand new tracks.

Sounds like: Leo Kalyan, Twin Shadow, Jai Paul, JUNGLE, Disclosure, Prince, Blood Orange, Harts, Oyinda, Shy Girls

Falsetto-heavy synthpop is the best way to describe ‘Torn Up’ by The Black And The White; a band who is currently making waves in Los Angeles.
