KYVA – Dollar Sign

KYVA - Dollar Sign

KYVA is the dynamic new project from Australian-based Kyle Linahan.

Backing vocalist for artists including Adele, Ngaiire, Touch Sensitive, and Set Mo, KYVA’s solo project is freshly signed to seminal New York City indie label Frenchkiss Records.

Clear echoes of Prince and tinges of post-punk, his new single ‘Dollar Sign’ considers the complex relationship with money, specifically the temptations and pitfalls of living through late-stage capitalism.

The track – co-produced by The Jezabels’ Samuel Lockwood with Vlossum’s Alister Wright and mixed by Kllo’s Simon Lam – is a retro-futurist reverie in which distant synthetic melodies work their way through a neon-lit fog. Watch the visuals below.

Calypso

Calypso

Tasmanian musician, Calypso, has just dropped her self-titled, debut EP.

Of the EP, Calypso says,

“I suppose the main themes behind the EP would be growth and change…whether that’s within a relationship or within oneself. I think it’s a reflection on how life is constantly moving, and you have to adapt to your surroundings and learn how to survive through the changes.

The EP is also about the push & pull of love, how we can connect with other people and how we can move apart from one another as well. I hope the EP can take the listener on a bit of a journey, as they connect and relate to the words and the music through their own personal experiences.”

Each track has been influenced by old and new music, and we’re pretty sure would include the following tracks in Calypso’s’ ‘Winter in Tassie’ playlist.

Elderbrook – Be There Soon
This is the type of song I can listen to over and over again and not get sick of, chilled relaxed vibes.

Mansionair – Hold Me Down
Just a nice song to listen to when I’m in a nice song kind of mood.

Cub Sport – Only Friend
This song makes me feel happy and sad at the same time.

Pavel Dovgal – Faust
I really like the strings in this song and the intensity of the music.

Les Loups – White Clips
I like the rise and falls and the chorus is catchy and easy to listen to.

Yacht – Psychic City
This songs puts me in a good mood when I’m cold and stuck in a Tassie winter.

Dream Koala – Odyssey
I love this guys voice and the way the song builds up at the end. Its just an all round beautiful song.

Bea – Filthy Believer
Good memories from this track, long tassie nights with music to keep us company.

Elderbrook x andhim – how many times
I put Elderbrook in here twice because I’ve only just discovered him and I think his music cool.

Ngaiire – Once
I saw Ngaiire playing the other night as part of the Festival of Voices and she was absolutely incredible.
