Premiere: Nicky Venus – Bodily Love

Nicky Venus by Shane Wilson

Nicky Venus by Shane Wilson

We recently received a press release asking us “Who is Nicky Venus?”

It’s a good question and one that Indietronica felt required answering.

Upon listening, we discovered that Nicky Venus is a sophisticated San Diego-based synth pop act, who has won the Best Pop award at the San Diego Music Awards 2014.

He sought musical inspiration during his travels in Asia, with nothing than a laptop, backpack and un-mailed letter to hand. The result is his new album ‘Little Runner’; a highly danceable album about suffering for love.

Indietronica is proud to be premiering the second track from the album called ‘Bodily Love’. It is full of lush minimal arrangements with a deeply sinister and haunting undertone.

Nicky will be releasing singles monthly until the album is released in November.

Sounds like: Depeche Mode, Tom Vek, LCD Soundsystem, David Bowie, Simple Minds, Thompson Twins, We are Scientists, The Album Leaf, White Arrows, College, Shiny Toy Guns, Zella Day

Love Ssega – Minds

Love Ssega

Love Ssega

Love Ssega releases ‘Minds’.

Some of you with a keen ear may recognise Ssega’s vocals. He was featured on Clean Bandit‘s ‘Mozart’s House’, which he also co-wrote as a former member of the band, following his time at Cambridge University where he studied chemical engineering.

It seems Ssega has also found some time to extensively study a decent tune. ‘Minds’ cleverly channels a mix of New Wave, 80s hip-hop and NYC disco into smart modern pop.

He is signed to Hometown/Sony.

Sounds like: Talking Heads, LCD Soundsystem, Tom Tom Club, Kindness, LA Priest, Prince

Death In The Afternoon – ’82

DITA

DITA

Death In The Afternoon (DITA) is a Scandenaivna electronic duo, formed of Christian and Linda.

With the current media age, there are no boundaries for musicians to team up and produce a track remotely across the globe from one another. This is exactly what DITA have done with new song, ‘’82’.

Airy, dreamy and filled with sky high vocal lines and a sense of melancholia, this is one beautiful death in the afternoon.

Listen below.

’82 will be released via Summer Heart’s label Sommarhjärta, and it will be available for sale and download everywhere from the 28 August.

Sounds like: Anteros, M83, MGMT, Young Galaxy, Summer Heart, Goldroom, Karl Kling, RAC, Washed Out, Day Wave

Selebrities – Temporary Touch

Selebrities

Selebrities

With their first US West Coast tour beginning on 15 August 2013, Selebrities are a former Florida, now Brooklyn-based band. Maria Usbeck (vocals), Jer Robert Paulin (guitar, bass) and Max Peterson (keyboards) released their debut album ‘Delusions’ on 10 July 2012.

They have a lot of competition with the 80s new wave comeback in full swing, but no other band seems to sound as original as Selebrities.

Their second album ‘Lovely Things’ throws us even more post-punk 80s flashbacks.

The second upbeat, and slightly grungy track from the album is ‘Temporary Touch‘. The video featured below films Maria Usbeck singing to us in various ways, including with a lion. We have no idea why the lion is in the video, but she is looking incredibly like Chrissie Hynde from The Pretenders, which isn’t a bad thing.

The video was directed by Holland Brown.

Fellow Cascine labelmates, Keep Shelly in Athens have also remixed ‘Temporary Touch’ and is it available for free download.

California Wives – Marianne

California Wives

California Wives

Chicago quartet California Wives were formed in 2009 by multi-instrumentalists and high school friends Dan Zima and Joe O’Connor. Zima and O’Connor were later introduced to guitarist/keyboardist Jayson Kramer; a former pre-med student at Boston University who quit to follow his career in music.

‘California Wives’ released debut EP ‘No. 8’, with a second EP ‘Affair’ following in 2010, but it wasn’t until Graham Masell joined the band on lead guitar in 2012 that their talent was really showcased.

This was a talent noticed by Vagrant Records, who signed California Wives shortly after.

Their debut full length album, ‘Art History’ (produced by Claudius Mittendorfer), was created, complete with a music video for each song, for only $1,000. Kraymer describes the songs from the album as coming ‘from a relatable place of losing one’s youth’.

‘Art History’ was released on 4 September 2012 via Vagrant Records.

The official video for ‘Marianne’, taken from ‘Art History’, is one of our favourites. The band are filmed playing ‘Marianne’ in a chilly warehouse, but the DIY video doesn’t distract you from Kraymer’s incredibly soft voice which synchronises perfectly with the dreamy chords and summer synths that are somewhat reminiscent of the 1980s, as well as new kids on the block, The 1975.

Watch the video below.

A My Gold remix of ‘Marianne’ can also be downloaded for free on the band’s Soundcloud page.

Sounds like: The Naked and Famous, Swim Deep, The 1975, New Order, The Cure
