Meet Montreal-based producer ZAGATA (aka Jesse Proteau).

On that note, here is said wicked playlist. Enjoy!

Moderat – A New Error
Very inspiring synth bass line and tones.

Like the overall mix from Chris Coady on this. Sometimes less is better.

Just my fav song from them. Definitely one of my fav bands as well.

Adriatique – Space Knights
I’m just so stoked about the mood of this track.

Crystal Castles – Not In Love (Feat. Robert Smith)
This track is the definition of a perfect song. That chorus is just awesome.

College and Electric Youth- A Real Hero
I like the simplicity of this one. Sweet blend. Perfect amount of melancholy and hope.

George Fitzgerald – Full Circle
My favourite song for training. Like the vibe, BPM, synths, tone and vocals. Best album of 2015.

Com Truise – Karova
I just love how Com Truise mixes his drums. Tone reference at all points.

Caribou – Can’t Do Without You
Such an amazing Canadian artist.

1 Moderat song is not enough!

Paris & Simo

Paris & Simo

Meet Canadian electronic dance duo, Paris & Simo.

The video for their latest track, ‘Evermore’, features the melodic vocals of Gabrielle Current and FINNEAS (THE SLIGHTLYS), and follows Paris & Simon charmingly wandering the streets of Montreal.

Speaking of the track, Paris & Simo explain,

“We had so many ideas of what we wanted to do musically, so we set out to find some of the newest and most talented songwriters we could find to bring the best new set. When we found Finn and Gabrielle they brought exactly what took the song to another level and created a bond between us as songwriters that we hope inspires more material in the future, Enjoy!”

Heartstreets – Cruising With You

Heartstreets

Heartstreets

Don’t be fooled. Canadian duo, Heartstreets, may well write the soundtrack for the DIY youth of today, but they do not create bubblegum pop.

The new video for ‘Cruising With You’ says just that. It has been produced by Soulection’s Da-P, and immediately conjures up images of driving a lowrider through dodgy neighbours into the early hours.

Oddly enough, the video doesn’t offer this scenario to us, but rather focuses on a young man who is particularly sensitive to auditory stimuli and perceives sounds in a hypersensitive and amplified manner.

Altamina – Under The Black Sea

Altamina

Altamina

Altamina was originally a side project from US-based, Francois Graham and French-Canadian, Marco Gervais of Montreal’s Surface of Atlantic, but it soon developed into a fully-fledged, international band, following the enlistment of Australian, Matt Davis on drums and French-Canadian, Roxanne Miller on bass in 2014.

Sincere lyrics touched with baritone vocals, steady drum beats, and ambient riffs make ‘Under The Black Sea’ a stand out track from an equally as impressive band.

Their album, ‘Tomorrow Morning Will Be Tonight’ is out now.

Sounds like: The National, War On Drugs, Nick Cave, Joy Division, Phoria

Heartstreets – Crawling South

Heartstreets

Heartstreets

Canadian-based alt-pop duo, Heartstreets have just released their 2016 debut called ‘Crawling South’.

Born in Budapest and half Peruvian, Emma Beko grew up in Montreal but take her rap music influence from New York City and from her cultural background. The R&B tone of Gab fits perfectly with her friend of 14 years.

‘Crawling South’ is an extraordinary break-up song, with an equally unique music video, which was directed by local friend of Heartstreets, Charlotte Ratel.

The video explores the trend of the “break up box”; everyone has kept at least one item of a past loved one in a box of memorabilia.

‘Crawling South’ has been taken from their debut single off their upcoming EP set to release this spring.

Sounds like: Shura, Jessie Ware, Wet

Grimes – Flesh without Blood/Life in the Vivid Dream

Grimes

Grimes

Montreal experimental-electronic artist Clair Boucher aka Grimes has been had a very natural progression of producing great music and ascension through time, with her fourth album ‘Art Angels’ due out in November.

The self-directed video for ‘Flesh without Blood/Life in the Vivid Dream’ follows a lost angel. The first act is a quirky and colourful portrayal of pop, and boasts everything we love about Grimes. The second act is still pretty macabre, but is more of a view into the softer side of Grimes, showcasing her high calibre vocals.

It is taken from her forthcoming album ‘Art Angels,’ which is out digitally 6 November on 4AD. Pre-order on iTunes.

Sounds like: Kyle La Grange, iamamiwhoami, FKA Twigs, Purity Ring, Sky Ferreira, MØ, Austra, Charli XCX, Henri

Foxtrott – Shaky Hands

FOXTROTT

FOXTROTT

FOXTROTT is the sole musical domain of Marie-Helene Delorme; a self-taught singer, songwriter, producer and beat-maker from Montreal.

Her latest track ‘Shaky Hands’ has addictive hooks and vocals with attitude. We caught up with FOXTROTT for a little chat:

You are a self-taught producer and musician. How did this come about?

I received classical musical training as a child, piano and violin, but realized, as a young teenager, that this environment was not for me. I started messing around secretly in my bedroom with an old version of cubase and learned the whole thing by myself. That was before youtube tutorials even existed! Took me 2 weeks to make one sound, and it just went from there. When I realized I could make entire tracks on my own, write all the parts, make all the sounds, I was in heaven! Then, I just kept of exploring, working hard and finding my own sound and voice.

Describe the FOXTROTT sound in three words.

Warm – Phat – Melodic

You are gearing up for the release of your debut album, ‘A Taller Us’. How have you found the process of producing it?

Making a whole record on your own is a lot of work but really satisfying! When I listened to the masters, I couldn’t believe that I made it, which was really fulfilling. It was also a very healing process, since I explored some deep and personal themes. I see this record like almost a journal from my young adulthood.

Where do you cite your musical influences from?

I don’t like to talk about “influences” because I really find inspiration anywhere. Food, art, feelings… Musically, I am attracted to anything that has soul, that comes from a place that’s real. In whatever style or branch, you can really sense when it’s the case.

We love new music at Indietronica. What new music are you listening to?

I’ve been listening to The Internet‘s last record a lot lately! It’s really good. I also really like Little Simz, I’ve been following her for a while now and am always amazed.

The debut album, ‘A Taller Us’ is set for release on 6 November via One Little Indian.

Sounds like: Kate Boy, Dena, Karen O, Ben Khan, Her, Billy Who, Gems, The Magnettes, Rudimental, Jungle, Little Dragon, Björk

NŌVA - More

NŌVA – More

NŌVA is a 19 year old singer/songwriter from Montreal, Canada.

When we first listened to NŌVA, we thought her sound had similarities to R&B soulstress, Banks, and then we discovered a stripped back cover of Banks’s ‘Under The Table’ on her Soundcloud.

Following a busy stint in the studio, NŌVA has excitingly self produced her debut track ‘More’ for our listening pleasure.

It is full of dark and edgy undertones.

Listen below:

‘More’ has been released by NŌVA and can be purchased on iTunes now.

Foxtrott – Driven

FOXTROTT

FOXTROTT

FOXTROTT is the sole musical domain of Marie-Helene Delorme; a self-taught singer, songwriter, producer and beat-maker from Montreal.

Originally releasing remixes and supplying beats for other local talents, she broke cover as FOXTROTT with her 2012 debut, ‘Shields’, an emotionally arresting three-track EP.

“I was making a lot of beats and stuff, but I needed to express something deeper…My goal was to find the perfect balance between rhythms and frequencies, the production style that I wanted to put forward, and lyrics and emotional presence expressed by the voice. It was a big challenge I set myself”.

Watch below the wicked video for new track ‘Driven’:

Vogue Dots – Way With Silence

Vogue Dots - Way With Silence

Vogue Dots – Way With Silence

Vogue Dots (aka Tynan Dunfield Babette Hayward) is a Canadian pop duo from Halifax, New Brunswick. We were first drawn in by their name but soon became distracted by their haunting, yet alluring music.

Mesmerising new single, ‘Way With Silence’, follows on from the success of ‘Way Out’ (which was originally released on Cascine’s digital singles label CSCN).

‘Way With Silence’ is a mysterious, but gorgeously melodic track. It is full of synth-based structures, yet instantly evokes lament.

The track is taken from the forthcoming sophomore ‘Mauka EP’, which was recorded in a cottage on Belle Isle and is due out 21 October via Montreal’s Indica Records. It follows on from last summer’s debut EP ‘Toska’.

Pre-order the ‘Mauka EP’ on iTunes now!
