Interview: RÜFÜS

RÜFÜS

RÜFÜS

Sydney-based band, RÜFÜS, are back with a new video and a cool remix of ‘Be With You’

Considering RÜFÜS tour non stop, we were pretty lucky to tie them down for an interview. Unfortunately, we still haven’t gotten to the bottom of the name difference in North America and the rest of the world…

Hi RÜFÜS, we are huge fans! For those of you who don’t know you yet, tell us a bit more about yourself and how you all got into music.

Calling the band RÜFÜS was a decision we made because we liked the way it sounded foreign to us, and also because it was quite symmetrical on paper, which we liked also. However, we didn’t think that most people would assume RÜFÜS is the name of the singer in the band. We’ve been trying to get people to realise we are a 3 piece live act for the past few years. They don’t get it even when they come to a show.

Why do you call yourselves RÜFÜS du Sol in North America, but RÜFÜS in the rest of the world?

Our attorney has advised that legal reasons is the appropriate answer.

Describe your sound in three words.

Never ending touring.

Where do you cite your musical influences from?

So many places. They are different for each of us. We listen to a lot of contemporary music to get inspired. Recently, we’ve been listening to a lot of Radiohead, Moderat, HAELOS, Bob Moses, Leon Vynehall etc. In the past it was Booka Shade in a massive way. They are the godfathers.

Friend Within has just released a remix of your track, ‘Be With You’. How did that come about?

We’ve wanted him to work on a remix for a while.

You are playing your biggest show to date in London in October. Tell UK fans why this will this be such a great show!

We’ve heard the venue is special. The first night sold out so we’ve announced another show, so we’re always in a very good mood when we get to do 2 shows back to back without driving, flying somewhere in between. It’s a real treat for us so we’ll make sure we are good to those who made it possible 😉

We love new music at Indietronica. What new music are you listening to?

Answered this one above. But, Anderson Paak and Blood Orange have really nailed it this year.

Sounds like: Cut Copy, Foals, Booka Shade, Holy Ghost!, Midnight Juggernauts, Goldroom

RÜFÜS – You Were Right

RÜFÜS - You Were Right

RÜFÜS – You Were Right

Back in Sydney from a writing trip away in Berlin, and radio-ready, RÜFÜS offer up new single, ‘You Were Right’.

It’s a track about unrequited longing for someone (we’ve all been there!).

Vocalist Tyrone explains: “We got home after being away for 5 months, we’d spent the last part of that locked up in this special little apartment in Friedrichshain that we turned into our studio. But, it was so cold that we were rarely leaving the apartment….so coming home to summer in Sydney, being surrounded by the familiarity of everything that being home entails, we were suddenly approaching song writing in a different way, both technically and emotionally. We were able to unlock a different side to our writing.”

The track is out on 17 August on Columbia Records

Sounds like: Cut Copy, Foals, Booka Shade, Holy Ghost!, Midnight Juggernauts, Goldroom

Mackintosh Braun – Interview and We Ran Faster Then

Mackintosh Braun

Mackintosh Braun

Portland dreamy electro-duo, Mackintosh Braun releases ‘We Ran Faster Then’; a stunning electro track with dreamy vocals. The perfect end to a hectic bank holiday weekend.

We caught up with Ben…

How and why did you start making music?

We both started at a young age. Ian was a member of his family band growing up and was interested in song writing and production very early on, writing and producing his own music.

I (Ben) grew up around music my whole life. My dad played drums for Hall & Oates for over 20 years which spurred my interest in musicianship and songwriting. I’ve been producing and writing music since I got my first drum machine at 11.

We both love what writing brings out of us, and are very connected creatively on that front.

Describe your sound in three words.

nostalgic-future-pop.

Where do you cite your musical influences from?

We both grew up on Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Michael Jackson and Bowie. Some more current and constant inspirations include Holy Ghost!, Midnight Juggernauts and Phantogram.

We love new music at Indietronica. What new music are you listening to?

Some current favs are Tame Impala, Mew and Beach House. The music scene is vast and inspiring, so much to listen to these days.

What is next for you? Are you planning a tour?

Yes we are planning a tour and are exciting to get our new album Arcadia out to the world and play new songs for everyone. It’s going to a fun ride.

RÜFÜS – Take Me

Rufus2

Although not brand new, ‘Take Me’ is due to receive its official release with Columbia Records on April 14th. The tropical anthem from aussie indietronica artists RÜFÜS is an uplifting, feel-good tune, blending romantic electronic pop with Balearic-style house.

‘Take Me’ is the second track to be taken from their forthcoming debut album ‘ATLAS’, out April 28th. ‘Atlas’ is available to order here via Australia, where it has already been released and subsequently reached number 1. The video is a clever montage of model landscapes and tribal outfits.

Currently playing a bunch of shows at SXSW, RÜFÜS have now announced they will be supporting Cut Copy on a bunch of UK dates,  and have also just released this gem – a cover of Foals ‘My Number’ and Booka Shade ‘Charlotte’, which is, quite simply, awesome.

Soop – Buffalo Buffalo EP

Soop

‘Buffalo buffalo’ is the name of the debut EP by Melborne, Australia residents Soop.

Soop started in 2013 when three friends and musicians- Michael Burke (lawyer, lasers, synths and beats), Stacy Gougoulis (vocals) and Mitch Secrett (guitars, beats and mixes), began sending eachother snippets of songs and ideas, progressing to quiet jams in apartments, and resulting in releasing a number of intricate and carefully crafted tunes.

With unique and floral beats combined with cascading synths and reverb-laden guitars, “Buffalo buffalo” is an exploration of electronic indie-pop sound culminating in one epic saxophone solo.

Opening with Ostrich of War- a bundled explosion of tracked vocals, cut up guitar and broken drums, through to the catchy choruses of High High High and Follow the Leader, the EP adventures into thick sonic territory and takes triumphant endings to a new high.

Recorded and mixed by the band in Melbourne, the EP was mastered by Paul Gold (Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear) and is out now, available to purchase here.

Sounds like;  Postiljonen, Miike Snow, Midnight Juggernauts, Beach House

Cut Copy – Let Me Show You

Cut-Copy

Australian Cut Copy have released the official stream of new single ‘Let Me Show You,’ aftercutting a limited edition of 100 dub plates that were sold to lucky fans at The Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago.

‘Let Me Show You’ has an underlying warbling riff, decorated by a slow percussive beat and the usual intricate synth overlying, and the vocals on the verses have a distinctive ‘Madchester’ sound, adopted by rising fellow Australians Jagwar Ma. However, the track as a whole is full of the classic disco groove we all love and expect from Cut Copy, despite the track not being the kind of electro-pop banger with huge vocal melodies fans of ‘Zonoscope’ will be hoping for.

The video is an intense strobe heavy visual which requests you ‘focus on the centre’.

Sounds Like; Jagwar Mar, Midnight Juggernauts, Daft Punk
