Tally Spear – City Girl

Tally Spear

Folk/pop singer Tally Spear shares her new single, ‘City Girl’.

You’d be forgiven for thinking Spear comes from further afield than London, with her fitting take on US-born country with a pop tinge.

Although Spear’s debut EP, ‘Fade To White’, received critical acclaim in the spring of 2018, she knew that something didn’t feel quite right to her. Despite having attracted nearly 200,000 streams for her single Days Like These, Spear decided to take time out.

During the 5 months she spent crafting her new material alongside acclaimed writer/producer Martin Hollis (Adele, Mark Ronson, Tom Walker, The Staves) at British Grove Studios.

Tally explains, “Something just happened with my taste. I just went through a change of what I was listening to when I was writing. It just became this new sound. I had a very clear vision of what I wanted to do in terms of production.”

The result is ‘City Girl’. Listen below.

Le Youth – I Could Always Feat. MNDR

Le Youth

Los Angeles-based producer Le Youth releases a slightly surprising more chilled out track than usual, featuring talented American producer, singer, songwriter MNDR who has worked with the likes of Mark Ronson, RAC and Flume.

Speaking of the track, Le Youth explains,

“…Creatively speaking, ‘I Could Always’ is a bit different from the other songs I’ve put out. It’s not dance and it’s not pop. The music, vocal, and video come together to create a vibe that’s hard to describe, but you just get it… That’s how I knew this needed to come out. I’m so excited to share this one.”

It’s out now via Parametric/Atlantic Records.

Sounds like: RAC, Pink Feathers, Mark Ronson

The Kite String Tangle – This Thing We Got

TKST

Time to start cruising with The Kite String Tangle‘s unusually upbeat new single, ‘This Thing We Got’.

It’s a song about the butterflies you feel when you first get with someone, cleverly represented by the rosy horn section (think Mark Ronson, Rudimental). Originally planned to be 30 b.p.m slower than it now is, the slower melody is sampled in the chorus as a “song within a song”.

Watch the live video below.

‘This Thing We Got’ can be found on The Kite String Tangle‘s self-titled debut album which is available everywhere now via Exist Recordings.

Sounds like: RÜFÜS, Dead Ceremony, M83, TDeL2, Vancouver Sleep Clinic, The Weeknd, Active Child, Mount Kimbie, Fever Ray, James Blake, Cloud Boat

M83 – Go! feat Mai Lan

M83

M83

M83 (aka Anthony Gonzalez) makes a huge return with ‘Go!’, another track taken from his ‘JUNK’ album, out today via Naive.

Taking more of a Mark Ronson spin on things, ‘Go!’ is an exultant synth pop charmer that features lead vocals from French chanteuse Mai Lan, and a funky guitar solo by virtuoso Steve Vai.

Gonzalez describes the collaboration with Vai: “We asked for the craziest space solo possible, which wasn’t hard for him. He sent us three different takes, and we blended two to make the ultimate Steve Vai solo. It was amazing to work with him.”

An amalgamation of sounds, M83 is once again one step ahead on all levels of music innovation.

Sounds like: Foals, Mark Ronson, Prince, Harts, The Carpenters, Washed Out, The Naked and Famous, Thomas Azier

Lowell – I Love You Money

A classically trained musician, Toronto-based singer Lowell suffers from a rare neurological condition known as synaesthesia which causes her to process sound as colours thus having a huge influence on her music and visions.

Despite the fun and chaotic video for ‘I Love You Money’, Lowell writes to empower herself as much as her listeners. Lyrics openly tackle sexual abuse, rape, abortion, and women’s rights. She stridently addresses the lack of LGBT rights in our society as well the ignorance about (and simultaneous obsession with) homosexuality.

Lowell releases her debut album ‘We Loved Her Dearly’ in the UK on 9 March through Arts & Crafts.

Sounds like: M.I.A, Dena, Ji Nilsson, Santigold, Mark Ronson, Icona Pop
