Sky Ferreira – I Blame Myself

Lana Del Rey – West Coast

Lanadelray

Lana Del Rey is back, and her new track ‘West Coast’ is really quite something. Dark in nature, with Lana’s signature soft and breathy vocals, the track is sadly sweet, with a touch of soul and blues and a mix of tempos. Produced by Dan Auberach from The Black Keys, ‘West Coast’ was premiered during Lana Del Rey’s Coachella performance.

Her sophomore album, ‘Ultraviolence’ is soon to be released, and lead track ‘West Coast’ is a very promising indication it’s going to be more mature, refined, and sophisticated; dripping in the emotional nostalgia she does so well…

The video accompanying ‘West Coast’ is just a loop of a clip of Lana on a beach, dancing with a lover, both clad in leather jackets, carefree and lost in the moment, over and over again.

Sounds like; Sky Ferreira, Lorde, Bang Bang Bang, Marina & the Diamonds, Banks, Nancy Sinatra

Bang Bang Bang – Dreamphone

Nataliebandbang

Natalie Chahal aka Bang Bang Bang is the cool new girl on London scene, making her mark with new song ‘Dreamphone’, a song about the popular 90s girlie toy involving finding out who your secret admirer is….

Describing her sound as a mix of Hole, The Shangri Las, and early  Madonna – it’s clear her music and image is more sugar-coated than some of these bands, but perhaps ‘Dreamphone’ is just on the more pop end of what her music is all about. We are told she herself plays guitar and loves Hole & Pixies, and with promise of new music soon, we are very much looking forward to finding more about Bang Bang Bang!

Citing her influences as ‘mean girls and beach boys’, it’s clear Natalie wears her heart on her sleeve. Her retro-pop chic is a melting pop of different subcultures, and strangely addictive to listen to too. She writes her own music, produces her own videos and looks cute as a button, looking like a cross between like Lana Del Ray and Cher from Clueless. Rocking the emotional, popular, alt-preppy girl image which Sky Ferreira and Charli XCX do oh so well, Natalie is all about 90s pop culture, selfies, hashtags, tumblr updates, big cute panda eyes, and preppy attire.

‘Dreamphone’ is soon to be released on Luv Luv Luv Records and the video features Natalie and her friends dancing around a bedroom and clips from the popular HBO series ‘Girls’, pretending to speak to the characters on a Dreamphone, with the character Adam as her ‘dreamdate’.

Lorde – Team

Lorde

It’s been a swift journey to fame for the talented teen Lorde. Having topped the album charts in both the UK and US with single ‘Royals‘ and debut album ‘Pure Heronie,’ Lorde has emerged as a very credible, vastly more interesting contender to manufactured mainstream chart pop.

Having only recently celebrated her 17th birthday, the New Zealander recently celebrated her this at an event where she performed at the MOMA Film Benefit in New York in front of an audience including David Bowie, Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, Anna Wintour and Karl Lagerfeld.

Her latest release is Team, for which she has just unveiled a stunning video for, and is one of the most praised songs from her LP. Ella Yelich-O’Connor, aka Lorder, states-

This video was borne from a dream I had a few months ago about teenagers in their own world – a world with hierarchies and initiations, where the boy who was second in command had acne on his face, and so did the girl who was queen. I dreamt about this world being so different to anything anyone had ever seen, a dark world full of tropical plants and ruins and sweat. And of this world, I dreamt about tests that didn’t need to be passed in order to be allowed in: sometimes the person who loses is stronger.”

‘Team’ is out February 17th.

Sounds like: Charli XCX, AlunaGeorge, Marina & The Diamonds, Sky Ferreira, Grimes

Sky Ferreira – You’re Not The One

Sky Ferreira

LA cool girl model / singer Sky Ferreira has been making punchy pop-indietronica for a few years now, releasing stunning hit ‘Everything is Embarrassing’ back in 2011.

New track ‘You’re Not the One’ is about meeting someone who just isn’t for you, and accepting that as you move on. The video however, paints a different picture to these lyrics, showing Sky giving a provocative dance for an onlooker, who seems to have a lustful, tempestuous relationship with her. He is then seen later on in the company of another woman, to which Sky reacts badly to.

‘You’re Not the One’ is from Sky Ferreira’s album ‘Night Time, My Time’ due for release October 29th 2013 on Capitol Records.

Sounds like; Charli XCX, Marina & the Diamonds, MNDR, MS MR

Lorde – Royals

Lorde

Lorde

Sultry 16 year old New Zealand-born Lorde (aka Ella Yelich-O’Connor) has been making waves across the internet since the release of her debut EP ‘The Love Club EP’ in March 2013 via Universal Music NZ. The EP was put out with plenty of mystery but no marketing or publicity. It paid off with first single ‘Royals’ occupying the top spot in the iTunes singles chart, both in New Zealand and in Australia.

Fans of Lorde include Grimes and Sky Ferreira and there has been great enthusiasm and endorsement from influential blogs sharing the understatedly true-to-life video for the track, with its stark echoes of Larry Clarke’s cult film ‘Kids’. We especially love the subtle plug at the end of the video for her second single from the EP, ‘Tennis Court’.

Label buddy, The Weeknd is the latest to give ‘Royals’ the remix treatment.

Lorde will release her debut album, ‘Pure Heroine’, on September 30th 2013. The Weeknd will release his sophomore album, ‘Kiss Land’, on September 10th 2013.

Goldfrapp – Drew

goldfrapp2

London-based electronic duo Goldfrapp have just revealed lead song ‘Drew’ from their highly anticipated album ‘Tales of Us’ due out 9th September 2013 on Mute, available for preorder here . ‘Drew’ is a wonderfully cinematic folktronica track with a hint of jazz / swing, and a beautiful black and white short film depicting what appears to be a heart-wrenching memory of past love ending in a contrary love affair within the confined walls of a huge, peaceful, country house. The film is a taster from filmmaker Lisa Gunning’s feature film creation due out later this year to accompany the Goldfrapp new album.

Goldfrapp are Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory; veterans of the genre indietronica having formed back in 1999 during the tail end of the Trip Hop era.

Sounds like: Air, Lana Del Rey, Marina & the Diamonds
