Fairchild – Breathless

Fairchild

Fairchild

FAIRCHILD are an indie rock six-piece, hailing from Australia, now based in Manchester.

The 1980’s inspired ‘Breathless’ is a slow, sensual, four-to-the-floor rollick into unchartered territory, was produced by friend and collaborator Catherine Marks (Foals, The Killers, Wolf Alice) and recorded on the Gold Coast before they moved to the UK.

‘Breathless’ instigated a series of pre-production sessions, with each band member contributing ideas unhindered by genre expectations. FAIRCHILD worked individually and in small groups, at times swapping instruments, sharing half-baked riffs, beats, bites and grooves during an exacting four-month period of brainstorming and began to recognise parallels between their recordings and the songs of the 1980’s bands they’d always loved.

Speaking on the track, Adam Lyons explains, “Breathless is the most personal song I’ve ever written and it was built inside a computer. We didn’t play it as a band until we recorded live in studio with Catherine. The gap between creation and performance is what gives the song its personality. Or sexuality, as Catherine might say. In the studio we focused on presentation because the song was already there. It always had been.”

Continuing in this vein of musical exploration, brothers Adam and Nathan Lyons also run a label and management company called Canvas Sounds, which encourages collaboration, supports unsigned musicians and trials methods of songwriting and recording, previously unexplored by its artists.

‘Breathless’ is the title track of their new EP, which is set for release in early 2016.

Sounds like: Foals, Hurts, Wolf Alice, Neon Indian, Parachute Youth, Kids of 88, Flume, Last Dinosaurs, The Griswolds, Mothxr

Blossoms – Charlemagne

Blossoms

Blossoms

Madchester locals, Blossoms, return with the brilliant new track ‘Charlemagne’, teaming up once again with producers James Skelly and Rich Turvey.

‘Charlemagne’ has reigned over our musical hearts with its catchy synths and an unforgettable bass line complimented by Tom Ogden’s distinctive vocals (which really remind us of Suede‘s Brett Anderson).

They are definitely on our list of ones to watch for 2016.

16/10 NORWICH ARTS CENTRE
17/10 BIRMINGHAM THE INSTITUTE
21/10 PORTSMOUTH WEDGEWOOD ROOMS
22/10 BRISTOL THEKLA

Avec Sans – Resonate

Avec Sans - Resonate

Avec Sans – Resonate

New track from sparkling synth duo Avec Sans (aka Alice Fox and Jack St. James) is up!

The meaning of ‘Resonate’ is to produce or be filled with a deep, full, reverberating sound. The Avec Sans sound is built around Jack’s experimentation with hacked Launchpad controllers, of which he is an endorsee for manufacturer Novation. Jack uses several of the controllers in tandem to display light shows as well as to produce the music, resulting in a shimmering synthpop sound that has drawn comparison to Chvrches.

Sounds like: CHVRCHES, MS MR, Grimes, Kyla La Grange, EXGF, ATB, Kitten, ASTR, Racing Glaciers, Goldroom, RAC, The Knocks, Tegan & Sara

Kiera Lawlor – Gold

Kiera Lawlor

Kiera Lawlor

Underground artist, Kiera Lawlor has just released ‘Gold’.

Kiera has been under the radar of BBC Introducing for a little while now and the best way for us to describe her sound is as unique, Madchester electronica.

The video follows Kiera on her holiday in Thailand and is perfectly balanced between city and rural. If you weren’t thinking about summer before, you definitely are now.

Sounds like: Little Dragon, Ballet School, Phantogram, Santigold

Girl Friend – You Lead The Way

Girl Friend

Girl Friend

Manchester’s GIRL FRIEND releases ‘You Lead The Way’.

It is a theatrical and juxtaposing track that speaks of self-deprecation, but still manages to sound like a modern interpretation of a Balearic track from the late 90’s.

We like it a lot.

The track is taken from the ‘Arrive Alone, Leave Alone’ EP, which will be released via Tri-Tone on 27 April.

Sounds like: Kid Astray, Swiss Lips, Bastille

Swiss Lips – Books

Swiss Lips

Swiss Lips

Manchester is the capital of anthemic indie music in the UK. Standing tall is Swiss Lips and their latest effort, ‘BOOKS’.

With an 80’s electro sound and polished production, Swiss Lips has been described as Depeche Mode covering a Def Leppard track.

Swiss Lips said about ‘BOOKS’; “It’s about being young and confused by the world around you, smashing things up and starting again… From the moment that song came about we felt it was a special. We played it live on tour with Bastille and the audience feedback was really amazing.”

‘BOOKS’ is due for release on the 23 February via Foreverever / BMG Chrysalis with the bands self-titled debut LP following in March 2015.

Bipolar Sunshine – Daydreamer

Bipolar Sunshine - Daydreamer

Bipolar Sunshine – Daydreamer

Bipolar Sunshine is the Manchester raised alternative pop sound of Adio Marchant.

This time in collaboration with SBTRKT and with production by Fraser T Smith (Adele, Lily Allen, Sam Smith), new single ‘Daydreamer’ transmits to your ears an upbeat and catchy pop sound with intelligent lyrics.

The Tomek Ducki-directed video for the track is a kaleidoscopic vision of a daydreamer’s wild mind, and definitely conjures up the romance of escapism.

Exclusive UK Video Premiere of Coves & Caves – Heart Explodes

Coves & Caves

Coves & Caves

Describing themselves as “dream pop with a big heart” is Manchester trio James, Gavin and Andrew (aka Coves & Caves).

New track ‘Heart Explodes’ was written at a time when the number of band members was reduced to three, which may explain the exposed emotions in the track.

The indie shot video follows a couple (each with a balloon) attempting to find each other amongst different abstract settings. The Patrick Mateer-directed video is desolate (much like the harsh electronica sounds), and intermittently brightens up, only to become bleak again.

Click here for a free download of ‘Heart Explodes’, which is taken from their debut album, ‘Spinnerets’ (out now and also available to purchase on the band’s Bandcamp page).

Sounds like: Metronomy, New Order
