Playlist: POLO

POLO

POLO is an exciting new band comprised of Luke Lount, Kat McHugh and Daniel Edgell.

The trio base themselves out of “a total dive” town in Leeds, and use this rough’n’ready surrounding as inspiration for their music, which is full of heart and substance.

We asked POLO to put together a few of their favourite songs, and here they are!

Porches – Country

A song written like no other.

Baloji – Soleil de Volt

Got this on repeat at the moment… There are so many hooks throughout and there’s heaps of energy and life in the recording. Probably the funkiest song of the year so far

Patrice Rushen – Remind me

The slowest of slow jams.

Phoria – Red

Sonic bliss! These guys are super talented, and seem to always hit you right in the feels with their song writing ability.

Young Fathers – In My View

LOVE LOVE LOVE the sound young fathers are putting out at the moment. They’re nailing it for me with experimental lyrics through rap and spoken word and combining that with a big bodyshaking production. Also well worth a youtube for the music vid.

Olympia – Smoke Signals

A party favourite for the band. Feel good, fun and really damn catchy.

SZA – The Weekend

We all absolutely love SZA and this is just one of the many bangers from her amazing debut.

Amandla Sternberg – Let Me Stay Baby

Silky, smooth, sexy. A feast for the soul and ears.

Nils Frahm – Sunson

Beautiful and serene from start to finish. We had the pleasure of seeing him live recently and it was breathtaking.

Jon Hopkins – Emerald Rush

1 word: Cathartic.

Catch them live on one of their UK tour dates.

Sounds like: Kudu Blue, Jinka

PEAKES – Saint

PEAKES

Meet Leeds-based band PEAKES.

Having used a lot of Far Eastern-inspired synths and percussion in their previous single, ‘Pray For You’, ‘Saint’ takes a slightly different tack with more country-edged riffs. The song is another great example of PEAKES’ ability to write confessional lyrics whilst maintaining an overall soft approach in their production, which all in all creates a highly atmospheric setting.

‘Saint’ is out now.

Sounds like: Massive Attack, Portishead, London Grammar

Heir – I’ll Pick You Up

Heir

Five-piece, Heir, share their new track, ‘I’ll Pick You Up’.

It’s modest and understated with echoes of warm and rainy 80’s nights.

Heir have pretty impressive stats, having already played sold out shows in their hometown of Leeds and supporting Honne and The Dunwells. We are looking forward to hearing some more from these guys.

Sounds like: The Levity, Bastille

Izzy Flynn – Faith

Izzy Flynn - Faith

Izzy Flynn – Faith

Effortlessly combining elements of jazz with brooding electronica, and offering controlled vocals in an endearing British accent, Izzy Flynn, shares her song, ‘Faith’.

The UK-based artist has spent her time touring with hip hop band, Abstract Orchestra, which has likely influenced her current direction of sound. Another influence for ‘Faith’ may have been from the production side of things – the track is produced by one half of Majik and Dom from Submotion Orchestra.

Izzy’s EP is out on 18 November.

Fwar – Everybody

Fwar

Fwar

Following on from the catchy, ‘Nobody’, shapeshifter and musician, Fwar, shares the video for opposing track, ‘Everybody’.

Industrial twangs and minimalistic layers of Eastern tendencies, the video was choreographed by Barnaby Booth and edited by Isaac Eastgate (LA Priest, Kindness, Django Django).

Fwar says that, “Everybody is about allowing yourself the freedom to form a new identity by flirting with alternative outlooks, seeking new experiences & becoming alien to all that you took for granted. Nothing compares to being able to look at life with the curiosity of a child.”

Sounds like: Gold Panda, Hot Chip, Caribou, Jungle

Alt-J – Hunger of the Pine

Alt-j

Leeds outfit Alt-J have dropped the first song “Hunger of the Pine” from their second album, This Is All Yours, the follow-up LP to Mercury Prize-winning debut, An Awesome Wave.

The track is stark, hollow and echoes their trademark sound of building, progressive layers of minimal electronic embellishments across sophisticated, well thought out indie-pop. This new release however, also includes not only a touch of sax, but, more surprisingly, a vocal sample from Miley Cyrus’ Bangerz track “4×4” as a “I’m the female devil” hook.

This is All Yours is set for release 22nd Sept 2014, on the Infectious label. It is the band’s first release since the departure of band member Gwil Sainsbury.

Sounds like; Foals, Woodkid, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Maccabees
