The Magnettes – So Bad

The Magnettes by Frida Bäcklund Thuneström-

Swedish fuck pop trio, The Magnettes are back with a sultry video for ‘So Bad’.

It explores “people’s fucked up double standards”, especially in the music industry. The song cleverly starts with a high school teacher style ramblings. The video follows suit, as the trio find themselves in a dummy-like state, trying to escape the patriarchy forced upon them.

It’s taken from their debut album, ‘Ugly Youth’, due for release on 30 June via DigSin.

Playlist: Alex Maxwell

Alex Maxwell

Alex Maxwell

It’s always good to be clean, and no popstars come as fresh as London-based Alex Maxwell.

Want to know what her secret is? Showering to this playlist of course.

Cat Power – 3,6,9
I love her, her attitude, her power….

Lana del Rey – West Coast
…moody…vibey….right up my street

Only Real – Lemonade
I know all the lyrics to this song. Attempting to rap along to it in the shower gets me hyped up and ready for the day.

Moodoid – Je Suis La Montagne
A perfect symphony of psychedelic madness…especially toward the end.

Grimes – Flesh Without Blood
So obsessed with this girl.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Zero
Their songs never disappoint. Definitely one of my go-to’s… And Karen O is just too cool.

Bishop Briggs – River
I just recently discovered her and I’m hooked. Her voice is SO powerful.

Fleetwood Mac – The Chain
My favourite song by my favourite band. Pure genius.

Father John Misty – Strange Encounter
I could listen to this album on repeat and wouldn’t get bored. The music, the lyrics, his voice… pure and strong.

Russian Red – Cigarettes
The melody, her voice and intricate simplicity of this song is like a breath of fresh air.

Cigarettes after Sex – K
I love their sound. Their full EP is really worth a listen, and they do a sick cover of the classic “Keep On Loving You” by REO Speedwagon.

Myself! – No Flight
Out of all my tracks, I think this one fits best with the playlist.

Sounds like: Susanne Sundfør, First Aid Kit, All Saints, Zella Day, Lana Del Rey, Kylie Minogue

MILCK – Quiet

MILCK

MILCK

Proving anything but, MILCK shares ‘Quiet’.

It’s not just her vocals in ‘Quiet’ that we are astounding by, but also MILCK’s rise against her own history of physical and sexual abuse.

Ever an advocate for women’s rights, MILCK performed ‘Quiet’ at last Saturday’s Women’s March with 25 other female singers of all different backgrounds and ages in acapella ‘flash mob’ choral performances.

MILCK is also launching a major social media campaign around ‘Quiet’ to raise awareness against abuse of women and minorities. Proceeds from the project will benefit Step Up, an empowering nonprofit that provides after school and mentorship programs for underprivileged girls ages 13-18. More info here.

Aria Wunderland – Coup D’etat

Aria Wunderland - Coup D'etat

Aria Wunderland – Coup D’etat

NYC-born Aria Wunderland is going to be making quite a name for herself, having already written for the likes of J-Lo.

Using music as an escape from the political chaos of her home country, her debut single, ‘Coup D’etat’, talks of the lies fed to a powerless public.

Time to stand up and listen. This is one hell of a protest pop song.

Sounds like: ASTR, Tove Lo, Lana Del Rey, Banks, Halsey, Lorde

MILCK – Devil Devil

MILCK

MILCK

Time to listen to ‘Devil Devi’ by Los Angeles-based vocalist, MILCK.

As the name suggests, it’s a misgiving and rebellious affair, written about MILCK’s battle with oppression and conforming into what a young lady should be.

Forget those clean cut pop stars, MILCK is what a real music model should be.

Sounds like: Banks, Lana Del Rey

Donally – Cozmo Street

Donally - Cozmo Street

Donally – Cozmo Street

Time for a breezy track from Donally.

We know very little about Donally, apart from that she likes cruising on Cozmo Street.

Her track (conveniently, of the very same name) is so chilled, we’re surprised Donally can see where she’s going. Jazz and dance vibes lead this track and it’s simply lush.

Sounds like: Alice Jemima, Mallrat, Soleima, Lana Del Rey, Dagny
