I AM KARATE – Elevate

I AM KARATE

I AM KARATE

I AM KARATE is an unsigned Swedish electro pop dup comprised of Marta and Erika.

They originally met when singing in their local library, and soon realised they both shared a bond and desire for producing music.

Their latest track, ‘Elevate’, is audacious and efflorescent, and despite being wholly independent, I AM KARATE has managed to create a successfully commercial sound.

Listen below to be immediately lifted.

Kyla La Grange – So Sweet

Kyla La Grange

Kyla La Grange

The lovely Kyla La Grange is back, following the release of the enslaving ‘Cut Your Teeth‘, which was later remixed by tropical house DJ of the moment, Kygo.

Less of a goth princess this time, and more of an 80’s electro star, ‘So Sweet’ is a sugary pop treat. It has a backdrop of minimalistic synth beats, but it is Kyla’s vocals that really take the lead.

“I wrote So Sweet in my kitchen when I was feeling really happy and in love” explains Kyla, continuing “I started out with this arpeggiated jerky tuba type sound that I really liked but then wanted the choruses to feel a bit more cinematic with the dreamy guitars and harmonies, so there is kind of a weird contrast between the verses and the choruses, but I like it.”

If you’re wondering why the song feels different from Kyla’s previous material, she says “I guess 150bpm is pretty fast for a four to the floor track but I think it’s because I felt kind of buzzy when I was writing it. I never really wrote a love song before, at least not one that wasn’t sad.”

It is one of a collection of singles remixed by Jakwob.

Kyla will play Oval Space in London on 19 November; her biggest headline gig to date.

Sounds like: Little Boots, Robyn, Alison Moyet, Oh Land, MØ, Lana Del Ray, Grimes, Indiana, MS MR, Jakwob

Micky Blue – Champagne Reign

Micky Blue

Micky Blue

British-come-US native Micky Blue is a female artist who has made a return to the music industry more independent and stronger than ever.

Her stunning heartfelt new track, ‘Champagne Reign’, has been produced by Mickey Valen and co-written by Joren Van Der Voort.

In Micky’s own words, the track “is about how far some people are willing to go for the glamor and fame. I think you can still reach your dreams without “selling your soul” or loosing yourself, it’s a much harder and longer road but I think the payoff can be much greater.”

We couldn’t agree more. Listen below:

It has been taken from her upcoming EP entitled ‘Wild Things’.

Sounds like: Evvy, Noosa, Linney, Ayer, Ghost Beach, Kyla La Grange, Foxes, Keyes

Interview with Emily Vaughn & Better Off

Emily Vaughn by Shannon Bray

Emily Vaughn by Shannon Bray

Riding the wave of young indietronica talent from the US is Emily Vaughn, an electro princess from Florida.

Her new track ‘Better Off’ is about finding new beginnings in broken down, past relationships. We caught up with Emily to find out a bit more about her and the new track.

How and why did you start making music?

Something that’s been consistent since before I can even remember, is the writing and singing of melodies. Music made sense to me before anything else did, so I took what I knew and ran with it. I grew up in an artistic family who encouraged every musical move I’ve ever made. This is just what I do. It’s been an incredible journey of growth-in my self, my image, and now with the music industry. I’m extremely grateful to be experiencing such positive feedback as I share my passion with the world.

Describe your sound in three words.

Colorful. Transparent. Edgy.

Your new track ‘Better Off’ is about being happier without a relationship full of negativity. Would you say that your time spent in Florida has made you look on the brighter side of things?

It’s possible that the constant Florida sunshine might deserve some recognition for my positivity. However, I don’t think it’s had any significant impact on the way I handle situations. I always try to find the light in everything. Which is why Better Off is less about the boo-hoo moment of an ending relationship, and more about what’s to come now that there’s freedom in and around yourself.

Where do you cite your musical influences from?

I can’t get enough of all of the strong female pop artists taking the music industry by storm such as Betty Who, Banks, Haim, Robyn, and Taylor Swift. I pull influence from their music, obviously, but almost more importantly, I highly respect and try to mirror the way they carry themselves and display their image/character.

We love new music at Indietronica. What new music are you listening to?

This is a bit of a tough question to answer considering that my music taste varies from top 40 pop, to 90’s R&B and everywhere in between. However, I’ve been so obsessed with newer R&B artists like “Gallant” and if I’m honest, I’ve been binging on The Weeknd on repeat for the past few weeks.

Listen to ‘Better Off’ below.

Sounds like: Robyn, Evvy, Noosa, Indiana, Ghost Beach, Kyla La Grange, Betty Who, Banks, Haim, Taylor Swift, July Child, Monogem

Avec Sans – Resonate

Avec Sans - Resonate

Avec Sans – Resonate

New track from sparkling synth duo Avec Sans (aka Alice Fox and Jack St. James) is up!

The meaning of ‘Resonate’ is to produce or be filled with a deep, full, reverberating sound. The Avec Sans sound is built around Jack’s experimentation with hacked Launchpad controllers, of which he is an endorsee for manufacturer Novation. Jack uses several of the controllers in tandem to display light shows as well as to produce the music, resulting in a shimmering synthpop sound that has drawn comparison to Chvrches.

Sounds like: CHVRCHES, MS MR, Grimes, Kyla La Grange, EXGF, ATB, Kitten, ASTR, Racing Glaciers, Goldroom, RAC, The Knocks, Tegan & Sara

Say Lou Lou – Nothing But A Heartbeat

Say Lou Lou

Say Lou Lou

To celebrate the release of Say Lou Lou‘s debut album, ‘Lucid Dreaming’, the sisters have revealed a short film encapsulating the essence of the album in its entirety.

The film, set to the band’s single ‘Nothing But A Heartbeat’, was devised by the band and directed by Joanna Nordahl (Lune, Ji Nilsson). Alongside the album body of work, inspiration has been sought from Lars Von Trier’s ‘Melancholia’, Hans Zimmer and ‘On Being Ill’ by Virginia Woolf while drawing parallels to religious ideology and exploration of mental sanity. The band appear in a dream-like state, surrealistic and boundless with abstract thoughts running free.

The band explain the idea; ”Dreams are a way for human minds to digest their memories, and this film is sort of a digestion of our experiences of these past years as Say Lou Lou.”

Watch the stunning short film below:

Lucid Dreaming is available now via À Deux/Cosmos Music and can be purchased on iTunes here.

Indiana – Only The Lonely

We love Indiana‘s music videos and the new one for ‘Only The Lonely’ is no exception.

Expanding on the water/pool theme of the artwork from her new album, the De La Muerte-directed video follows Indiana swimming around a pool covered in glitter.
