FJER – Better

FJER

FJER

Making us feel a lot ‘Better’ about the beginning of winter, is New York based, Danish artist, FJER (aka Maja Barløse).

We’ve become a fan of FJER’s ability to switch her vocals between celestial falsettos and brooding, R&B flecked tones.

‘Better’ has been produced by Nector.

Expert her debut album to be released in 2017 via QUINTIC.

Meadowlark – Headlights

Meadowlark

Meadowlark

We’ve been long term fans of Meadowlark and it’s been a privilege to watch them grow from strength to strength over the last couple of years.

The Bristol duo have unveiled the official video for their new single ‘Headlights’.

Directed by the band’s, Dan Broadley, the video was filmed in one take. Dan explains,

“The expressive dancing explores many of the complex emotions that fuel a relationship, the passion, the rage, the bubble that encapsulates both bodies. Meanwhile Kate and myself weave in and out of this energetic routine, narrating the story from the lyrics whilst remaining invisible to the characters.”

Signed to Believe Recordings (James Vincent McMorrow, Gavin James), Meadowlark have a debut album on the horizon for 2017.

RALPH – Something More

RALPH

RALPH

80’s music lover, RALPH, is questioning whether there is ‘Something More’ in her new track, asking whether the grass is always greener?

“‘Something More’ was inspired by Aziz Ansari’s Netflix show ‘Master of None’,” explains RALPH, continuing “The show honestly narrates the existential issues faced by young adults now. Consumed with social media and dating apps, we’re obsessed with the idea of something more or someone better, often leading us to sabotage the good things we have.”

Meadowlark – Paraffin

Meadowlark by Giles Smith

Meadowlark by Giles Smith

Meadowlark (aka Kate McGill and Daniel Broadley) return with the brilliant new single called ‘Paraffin’.

We wrote about the duo some time ago, but since then their sound appears to have evolved; gradually building the tracks from simple melodies into dense sonic structures was an experimental process through which Meadowlark have firmly found their creative voice.

Directed by James Beale (All We Are, Phantogram, Jon Hopkins), the video is a dream-like take on a relationship that is skewed both visually and narratively.

Speaking about the concept behind the film, the band explain: “We’ve previously directed all our own music videos and this was the first time we had ever worked with someone else on one of our songs. It was amazing to not only collaborate with a new mind but to also be able to watch the video with fresh eyes for the first time, to enjoy it as someone else would. ‘Paraffin’ is ultimately a song about the ups and downs of a relationship and James has managed to show that intimately and openly between the two characters.”

‘Paraffin’ is the title track from Meadowlark’s forthcoming EP which is set for release on 22nd April via Believe Recordings. The new record is the follow up to Meadowlark’s 2015 released ‘Dual’ EP which was produced by Ant West of Oh Wonder.

Miles From Kinshasa – Kaya

Miles From Kinshasa

Miles From Kinshasa

Tending to our earlobes is Miles From Kinshasa, a South London based multi-instrumentalist and producer who makes “rumba-pop”.

His latest offering, called ‘Kaya’, is infectious and intense. Imagine the essence of the late 80’s has been captured in a glass bottle, which has been stored until current day, only to be shattered in an underground R&B club.

Miles says of the self-produced track “The name Kaya itself means little and wise amongst other things but generally has to do with some kind of wisdom”.

‘Kaya’ will be released as a double a-side on new South London based label One Time – available digitally and as a 7″ vinyl single.

Sounds like: Ben Khan, July Child, Solange, Blood Orange, Jai Paul

Alice Olivia – Wings Like Yours

Alice Olivia

Alice Olivia

Acoustic cover guru, Alice Olivia, changes directly and releases new icy, R&B track, ‘Wings Like Yours’.

The song is about love, possession and jealousy.

Olivia has worked with emerging UK producer Lipso, to produce overall quite a minimalist track which is further enhanced by her weightless vocals, all of which have been added to some snappy and gothic percussion.

It is the second release from EP, ‘Wanderlands’.

Sounds like: Jessie Ware, B. Miles, Lyves, Sasha Keable, Monogem, July Child, NÜME
