Jack Garratt – Breathe Life

Jack Garratt

Jack Garratt

Breathing life into the mainstream music scene is the confident young British artist/producer and multi-instrumentalist, Jack Garratt, who returns with the video for ‘Breathe Life’.

The video was shot in Los Angeles, and directed by Andrew Donoho (Raury/Willis Earl Beal) who Jack also worked with on the enlightening ‘Weathered’ video.

The track starts off gently with soft steel drums lapping Garratt’s soulful vocals. The video commences in a similar vein, with Garratt floating calmly in the water. He is soon joined by some synchronised swimmers as he becomes swept away from the shore and finds himself alone in open waters. It’s not clear whether this state of being alone is harmonious for Garratt, but it is not long until he is again joined by many more swimmers in a beautiful sequence of moves. Garratt is eventually led back to dry land.

His debut album, ‘Phase’ will be released on 19 February 2016 through Island Records. Pre-order ‘Phase’ on iTunes now.

4. Lina Fouro – ‘Bang Bang Baby’

Lina Fouro

Lina Fouro

Lina Fouro is a street smart Afghan-Canadian singer. Her super catchy track, ‘Bang Bang Baby’ is expected to be on her upcoming album ‘The Love Cycle’, which explores the highs and lows of love.

‘Bang Bang Baby’ sounds like it has been produced in Ibiza, but don’t be fooled into thinking this is just another Balearic-sounding summer hit from an artist across the pond because 1 minute in, ‘Bang Bang Baby’ is flipped on its head and turns into a molten of dubstep inspired bass.

KYLIAN

KYLIAN

Violin-trained Emily Holden (aka KYLIAN) has impressed us with her classical twist on electronica. Her first ballad is subtle, yet it gives us a snippet of what is to come from the singer. The primitive synths and towering drums definitely intrigue us.

Indiana – Mess Around

Indiana

Indiana

Indiana. Singer of songs, raider of arks. Or so it says on her facebook.

Indiana is a self-taught Nottingham-born singer/songwriter, who first started playing piano when she accidentally stumbled upon her sister’s dusty piano in storage.

She played ‘Blind As I Am‘ at her first gig in the Old Market Square in Nottingham as part of the Future Sound of Nottingham semi-finals. We were there and it was truly amazing to watch Indiana combine her powerful vocals with beautifully delicate piano and electronica.

With ‘Blind As I Am’ announced as one of BBC Introducing Picks of 2013, Indiana’s new single ‘Mess Around’ is no exception.

The video for ‘Mess Around’ is dark and mysterious. Indiana switches between playing an ice queen and a wicked witch, both of whom are taunting what we can only assume is an ex-boyfriend. This is one dark electronic fairytale. All that is missing is the poisonous apple.

The ‘Mess Around’ EP has an expected release date of 27 October 2013 via Sony Music, but you can pre-order it on iTunes now. The single will be backed by remixes from Le Youth, Etherwood, Raider and Hucci.

Sounds like: OH Land, Portishead, Alex Clare, Jamie Woon, Zola Jesus

James Blake – Retrograde

James Blake

James Blake

James Blake is an English electronic music producer and singer-songwriter from London. Blake was the runner-up in the BBC’s Sound of 2011.

Teenage Blake attended jungle, drum and bass, garage and dubstep clubs while studying music at Goldsmiths University. He began DJing and his initial releases (under Harmonimix) were rooted in the then-nascent British bass music scene.

However, Blake has classically matured since his dubstep years and whilst some criticise his move away from this genre, he still has a huge fan base, leading to a great deal of hype ahead of his debut album.

The first line from his track ‘Retrograde’ aptly states ‘You’re on your own, in a world you’ve grown’, and nothing can be more true to Blake’s musical journey to where he is today.

Watch the mesmerising video for ‘Retrograde’ below:

Blake’s second album, ‘Overgrown’ is released on Polydor Records on 5 April 2013.

Sounds like: Jamie Woon, Jamie XX, The Weeknd, SOHN
