The Magnettes – So Bad

The Magnettes by Frida Bäcklund Thuneström-

Swedish fuck pop trio, The Magnettes are back with a sultry video for ‘So Bad’.

It explores “people’s fucked up double standards”, especially in the music industry. The song cleverly starts with a high school teacher style ramblings. The video follows suit, as the trio find themselves in a dummy-like state, trying to escape the patriarchy forced upon them.

It’s taken from their debut album, ‘Ugly Youth’, due for release on 30 June via DigSin.

Sounds like: Charli XCX, Icona Pop, Lana Del Rey

Playlist: Dragonette

Dragonette

Dragonette

It’s not always about the girls, but sometimes it is.

The lovely Dragonette have put together a playlist for us called “Indietronica – an indie pop girls only mix”.

Listen below!

Santigold – Can’t Get Enough Of Myself (feat. B.C)
I was told that this song was inspired by an Iranian disco song from the 80’s. I’ve been listening to a lot of world music and I love how well they mashed this up. So unique.

Lucius – Born Again Teen
I feel deeply in love with Lucius’ first record. There are so many awesome songs on this new one of theirs Good Grief. But I’m choosing “Born Again Teen” on our playlist because i think its such an strange arrangement. Where’s the chorus!? I don’t know! Who cares?

Dua Lipa – Be The One
Every time I go back to London to work with other musicians I learn about artists who are up-and-coming over there. Last time I was there it was Dua Lipa. Maybe everybody already knows her but I just discovered her and I love the vibe of this tune.

Niki & The Dove – Coconut Kisses
Niki & The Dove’s The Drummer is one of my favourite indie pop albums of all times. I’ve been waiting a long time for their follow up. It almost reminds me of Empire Of The Sun. But with Stevie Nicks‘ voice.

Christine And The Queens – iT
My friend showed me this song the other day, I don’t know anything else of theirs. It’s the beginning of a new love I suspect.

Petite Meller – Barbaric
I think she’s a style genius. We played a show with her in Florence and I drank her up like pink lemonade.

Sounds like: Niki & The Dove, Charli XCX, Gwen Stefani, Icona Pop, OH Land, Little Boots, Girl Friend

Favorite Child – Just Wanna Belong

Favourite Child

Favourite Child

Rebel pop group, Favorite Child release the funky number ‘Just Wanna Belong’, featuring the vocals of Eric Rapp. Slightly ironic, as Favorite Child don’t really appear to be bothered if they fit in or not;

“We have an almost childish approach to putting songs together that really defines our style. As musicians, we reached the point where we no longer care about what’s expected from us. It’s part of ‘why don’t we try this, might sound cool?’ and part ‘fuck you we won’t do what you tell us’. It’s sort of like the rebel and the mad scientist in perfect harmony.”

‘Just Wanna Belong’ will be released later this spring via Roxy Recordings. Go get!

Sounds like: Tove Lo, Icona Pop, Erik Hassle, Chromeo

MAASAI – Collide

MAASAI

MAASAI

MAASAI is a Stockholm-based duo consisting of Dominique Teymouri and Zackarias Ekelund.

The pair met each other between music projects and soon realised that they should join forces, choosing the name MAASAI as a metaphor for solidarity and inner strength, as it mirrored the values they hold dear.

Their new single ‘Collide’ stirs the emotions to the core, with it’s cinematic touch and sonic beauty. It is a collaboration with the producer, Patrik Berger (Icona Pop, Charli XCX, Robyn).

Their incredible new album ‘Feeling Blue, Seeing Orange’ is out now.

Sounds like: Monogem, Florence + The Machine, SIA, Goldfrapp, Violet Days, Wet, Lykke Li, Skies

The Magnettes – Bones

The Magnettes by Catie Laffoon

The Magnettes by Catie Laffoon

Pop stars are usually clean cut, well behaved artists who write about nice things, such as love and rainbows. Not The Magnettes; a racy electro pop punk trio founded by best friends, Rebecka and Sanna.

In their new track ‘Bones’ the #sadgirls advocates talk about getting wasted, getting laid, and being social misfits in their small home town in Sweden.

Even their website asks us to “go down to start”, so with that in mind, go down to watch their new video:

‘Bones’ is out now via DigSin.

Sounds like: Charli XCX, Icona Pop

Cilia – Silhouettes in Slow Motion

Cilia

Cilia

Out of nowhere has appeared a little pop star who goes by the name of Cilia.

Cilia grew up in a small village, where music was her focus. Her new track ‘Silhouettes in Slow Motion’ is a sparkling pop gem, which Cilia says is about;

“How girls expect everything to be as in a romantic movie, that you expect too much, that perfect kiss scene with that “perfect guy” from your favorite movie, the guy who “read your mind” , knows when you are sad and are outside your door with roses and chocolate, the guy that does not exist.”

The track has been produced by Alx Go and Kim W (Tove Lo, Icona Pop, Erik Hassle) and the video is by Kentsdottir Art & Production.

Sounds like: Emile Sande, Tove lo, Icona Pop, Ellie Goulding
