Lovely Londoner, Liv Dawson, is one of our favourite newcomers from 2016.

Blende feat. Mattie Safer – Back To Summertime

Blende feat. Mattie Safer - Back To Summertim

Time to check out the funky nu-disco number from London based Swedish producer Blende, featuring vocals from Mattie Safer (formerly of The Rapture).

Originally a demo that Blende was about to scrap, it wasn’t until Mattie Safer gave it some sad, soulful vocals that Blende really started to pay attention to what was being created.

You may think ‘Back To Summertime’ reminds you of fun times in the sun, but listen closely, as this track goes deeper than that, considering the complications and burdens of everyday life.

It’s out now via Eskimo Recordings.

Sounds like: The Rapture, Joe Goddard, Hot Chip, The Presets

Bad Wave – 1955

Bad Wave

A juxtaposing theme in Bad Wave‘s new single, ‘1955’; a “nostalgia for the future” if you will.

Much like the melodies within the song, ‘1955’ is split between the progression of the past and hope for the future with it’s echoey harmonies and rocky guitar riffs.

‘1955’ is out now via 10K Islands.

Sounds like: Phoenix, Death Cab for Cutie, GUSH, Hot Chip, The Foals, Two Door Cinema Club, Ghost Beach

Shy Luv

Shy Luv is the project of Manchester based Karma Kid and Armeria. They’ve teamed up with JONES for ‘Shock Horror’.

It’s a beautiful neon number with funky falsettos and a trippy video to match.

The CGI-chopped video, directed by London-based French duo Bif, sees the band skydiving amongst mini-clones and giant women. Glorious!

The track is released on Black Butter Records.

Joe Goddard – Music Is The Answer

Joe Goddard by Marc Sethi

Joe Goddard by Marc Sethi

Continuing to pave the way for UK producers, Joe Goddard of Hot Chip/The 2 Bears shares ‘Music Is The Answer’, featuring the vocal talents of Jess Mills.

The video for the song is directed by Shynola creative collective. Director Richard Kenworthy says,

“The message of this track really resonated with us coming off the back of what for most people was a dispiriting year. We’d recently been reading about the AWOL Hitomi satellite, and also the incredible Pinchas Gutter hologram and that lead to imagine a story about a satellite lost in the vastness of space, broadcasting a recorded message of hope.”

‘Music Is The Answer’ is taken from ‘Electric Lines’, Joe’s debut solo album out 21 April via Greco-Roman/Domino Records. Pre order on iTunes here.

Sounds like: Roosevelt, Hot Chip, The xx, Four Tet, Caribou, Jamie XX

ELKKA – Try

ELKKA

ELKKA

Big up upcoming producer/singer/songwriter/DJ, ELKKA and her new video for ‘Try’.

Combining elements of pop, garage, and electronica with what sounds like samples of the Street Fighter game, the video is equally as complex. It has been directed by Adrian Ardelean and is the first in a trilogy where each EP will be accompanied by an intimate video.

‘Try’, co-produced with Pop Morrison, has been taken from ELKKA’s debut EP, ‘Her’, out now.

“This series of EPs are a lyrical documentary about a pivotal moment in my life. The series follows my experiences of meeting the first girl I ever dated. HER. It was completely intoxicating and for a brief moment it felt like it could have been more than just lust but of course, the drama and chaos she brought came later which you will hear all about in second and third part of the series – THEM and US.’’

Sounds like: Clean Bandit, The xx, Hot Chip, Crystal Fighters, Jamie xx

Klyne – Water Flow

Klyne by Synchrodogs

Klyne by Synchrodogs

Klyne are a duo comprised of 22 year old producer Ferdous Dehzad and singer Nick Klein, who have already supported Years & Years and Christine and The Queens.

New track, ‘Water Flow’, was created in the Dehzad’s childhood bedroom. Both specifically love the muffled sounds of the piano chords. Unintentionally created? Perhaps, but we like the hazy outcome. It works well with the soulful vocals and electronic backdrop.

‘Water Flow’ is out now via Big Beat Records/Because Music.

Sounds like: Honne, Ben Khan, James Blake, Boxed In, Hot Chip, Rhodes

Fwar – Everybody

Fwar

Fwar

Following on from the catchy, ‘Nobody’, shapeshifter and musician, Fwar, shares the video for opposing track, ‘Everybody’.

Industrial twangs and minimalistic layers of Eastern tendencies, the video was choreographed by Barnaby Booth and edited by Isaac Eastgate (LA Priest, Kindness, Django Django).

Fwar says that, “Everybody is about allowing yourself the freedom to form a new identity by flirting with alternative outlooks, seeking new experiences & becoming alien to all that you took for granted. Nothing compares to being able to look at life with the curiosity of a child.”

Sounds like: Gold Panda, Hot Chip, Caribou, Jungle
