Ruben Young – Bad Habits

Ruben Young - Bad Habits

Rising Canadian R&B artist Ruben Young shares the ever so smooth ‘Bad Habits’.

Speaking of the single, Ruben says,

“I wrote it in the fall of 2015, following my “relapse” for a girl I’d been chasing since I was 16 years old. She’s never been good for me, and I’ve known it all along. We kept our ‘relationship’ a secret, and it became more of an affair. She was my forbidden secret – my bad habit. 7 years later, it all came crashing down. I think everyone’s guilty of falling for someone who they couldn’t get over; even though they knew they needed to. For me, she was dangerous, and I loved that about her.”

Interview: Benji Lewis

Benji Lewis

Benji Lewis

Meet Australian singer/songwriter Benji Lewis, who has just released his debut ‘Hearts & Halos’ EP, along with its fourth and final single, ‘Night & Day’.

We had a chat with him to find out more about his music and being Benji Lewis.

Benji Lewis is a singer/songwriter from Melbourne. Tell us more about your day to day life as Benji Lewis?

Right now around the recent release of my EP, it’s a lot of being around the laptop, with emails and sharing to socials. It’s cool though, seeing new fans coming in, finding my music and having great sites and blogs come on board as well. I’m also setting up some features and collabs in Australia and the States, so some more emails, writing lyrics, melodies and getting in the studio when I can to record. In my free time though I’ll be with my sisters or housemates, a gin and tonic if I’m feeling it or I’ll watch a tv show, at the moment it’s Daredevil & Outlander.

Describe your sound in three words.

Emotion, Atmospheric, Vibes.

There’s an incredible amount of emotional energy that is poured into your music. Do you find it a difficult process tapping into such emotions?

I think I did at times, but when some memories are so visual still, everything can come flooding back. With some of the songs, especially ‘Reach You Where You Are.’ That one just came out of me when i was at the piano. You do feel it all again, so it isn’t all easy. But it does feel good to express it and let it out.

Your EP is called ‘Hearts & Halos’. Where did the name come from?

When deciding on the title, I had this huge list. But this one always stood out, from the moment I wrote it down. Well the EP is a lot about matters of the heart and then half of it is about the loss of my Mum, who is definitely now a guardian angel to me, so that’s where Halos came from. Then it just seemed a perfect fit, Hearts & Halos.

Where do you cite your musical influences from?

Influences and new music styles can always change for me. But when it came to this EP, going into it I definitely had in mind music from James Blake, Tove Lo and some emotion and vocal style from Emma Louise as well. While the other half was more influenced by Gorgon City, Peking Duk and The Weekend.

We love new music at Indietronica. What new music are you listening to?

About a month or two ago, before he hit the radio here in Australia I came across gnash, I really like stuff from him, especially ‘i hate u i love u’ & ‘leave a message.’ But I’m also liking Joy, Atlas Bound and anything from MNEK, he’s amazing, his production and vocals has all the vibes.

Sounds like: Antony Hegarty, Active Child, Gallant, Sam Smith, Solomon Grey, James Blake, Yazz, Jack Garratt, Disclosure, MNEK

Speaking of the video, Alpines singer Pockson said, “For me this video came as an all encompassing experience, where it took all of my energy and creative strength to try and represent the track, which is a very important song to me…Saviour is about the strength of a bond that you have with somebody and that bond represents a lifeline and something that is within your blood and veins, which to me is so rich and strong.”

One Bit – Interview & Limitless

One Bit - Limitless

One Bit – Limitless

One Bit is a pop house duo. Since writing about One Bit back in April, they have continued to grow in popularity, already becoming the most played act via BBC Introducing in 2014.

Indietronica had quite a humourous a chat with the duo.

Tell us a bit about One Bit.
We’re an electronic production duo consisting of Jonty Howard and Joe Murphy. We spend the vast majority of our time locked away in our home studio in Hertfordshire making all kinds of music.

When will you reveal your true identities?
Never! We’re like batman………….

Sum up your sound in 3 words.
Big Bitchin Bass.

Where do you cite your musical influences from?
We like to take influence from anything and everything so they’re pretty wide and varied! It’s a conscious decision that we’ve made so that we can stay creative with what we are doing – we often find the most interesting influences come from outside your own genre (if you can pick one!).

We love discovering new music at Indietronica. What new music are you listening to at the moment?
We also love finding new music! So much so that we have a monthly Spotify playlist where we talk about 10 new tracks each month – (One Bit Presents). But our two most played artists this month are probably Bombay Bicycle Club & Raleigh Ritchie.

We’re loving Bombay Bicycle Club – ‘Luna’. It gets stuck on the speakers in any downtime we have! Then Raleigh Ritchie – ‘Stronger Than Ever’ has been a killer find too, it’s always a great feeling when something you have been onto for a while starts blowing up on national radio!

What is next for you? Are you planning a tour?
Next in store for us is the release of our new single ‘Limitless’ which comes out on the 28th July with a whole host of remixes that we’re really excited about. Following that we’ve got a few festivals in the diary, Rhythms of the World (3rd Aug), UV festival (9th Aug) and Boardmasters (10th Aug).

We have no imminent tour plans, but have just got a really exciting booking agent on board so there are a lot of things coming together behind the scenes! We’ll be sure to keep everyone up to date as and when the pen hits the diary.

New track ‘Limitless’ is full of juicy bass lines. Listen below:

Sounds like: Clean Bandit, Le Youth, SOHN, Will Heard, Disclosure, Gorgon City, Lorde
