Secret Weapons – My Blue Heaven

Secret Weapons

It turns out Secret Weapons have been keeping a few things from us, the unfortunate news of lead singer Gerry Lange being ill. Whilst touring with bands like Weezer and Panic! at the Disco, the band kept Gerry’s health struggles quiet and as Danny Rocco says “strangely, the album became about making the album.”

Their latest single ‘My Blue Heaven’ embodies that very struggle.

Sounds like: Future Islands, The 1975, Lionel Richie, The Levity, The Island Club, Ghost Beach, Backstreet Boys, LANY, Great Good Fine Ok, The Knocks, Dagny

NOVAA x LO – Go There

NOVAA x LO

A collaborative album sounds exciting to us, especially when it’s written and produced by rising singer/songwriter/producer NOVAA and UK bedroom producer LO.

‘Go There’ is the third single from their ‘LIGHTS’ album, and “is about empty promises and letting go of someone that doesn’t really want you. It’s the moment you realize that you’re put on hold and that it’s not a romance but a game. The bubble you lived in pops and you find yourself playing a role and being someone that you don’t want to be.”

The album is out now on 29 September via Majestic Casual.

Sounds like: FØRTE, Mura Masa, Aurora, Diplo, AlunaGeorge, Grimes

Soleima – Wasted

Soleima

Soleima

It’s Monday morning and some of you may still be wasted from the weekend’s antics, or even contemplating how the weekend was wasted.

One woman heavily discussing the wasted topic is Copenhagen-based singer Soleima (aka Sarah Mariegaard, formerly of Danish hip-hop outfit Flødeklinikken).

“Off-sounding” writings merged between electronic pop and hip-hop, luxurious synth arrangeents and majestic instrumental touches, ‘Wasted’ is a summery track. Production is courtesy of Vera (Liss, )

Previously living in Tanzania for a portion of her life, some of the vocal melody structures could arguably be inspired by the Sukumaland song tradition, the specific region in Tanzania where Sarah lived.

According to Soleima, “…the song is about allowing yourself to run away from a crazy and awful world. Using a disguise and forgetting everything for a moment. But also it is a song about having blinders on. Not recognising, or choosing to forget – that we are living in a fucked-up world.”

“To me the term “wasted” gets double sided in this song,” Soleima explains. “The obvious meaning is of cause being drunk/high and therefore unable to process thoughts and logic. The other way to look at it, is that some people, like myself, are able to lead a certain kind of life whereas many don’t have the same possibilities as me – and sometimes that chance can be wasted.”
