Daniella Mason – Emotional Rollercoaster

Daniella Mason

Surprisingly, we’d not heard of Nashville-based singer/songwriter, Daniella Mason, before today, and quite frankly, we are blown away by her talent for crafting beautiful and intelligent pop music.

A journey of loss, Mason’s new record stands as one of four EPs that she’ll be releasing over the course of the next year as part of her State of Mine sound series. Each album — Emotional State, Physical State, Mental State, and Spiritual State — will explore the different parts of our humanity that we tend to suppress and have difficulty embracing.

Sounds like: Imogen Heap, The Japanese House, Robyn, Maggie Rogers, Billie Eilish

Charlee Remitz creates synth pop full of big dreams.

Having recently moved from Nashville to Los Angeles, the singer/songwriter’s music shines. Her new single ‘Forever Like This’ has lashings of 80’s inspired synths and breakaway vocals that tell a story of the first flashes of love.

It is the third single from her upcoming sophomore album, ‘Sad Girl Music’, out on 9 November.

CUB by Matt Stephens

CUB blends pop and dance sounds.

We featured his new single, ‘Obsessed’ featuring Clara Hurtado, not that long ago and he’s come back with a lively new video for it. These two don’t take themselves too seriously, which is pretty refreshing.

If you follow CUB’s Twitter you will see more videos of him and Clara goofing around.

f-2-7-2111517_N35In8fO_LCMDF1_by_silja_minkkinen

Finnish sister duo LCMDF release ‘Waterfalls’, taken from their ‘Sad Bangers’ album, out now.

Don’t be misled by the ironically positive pop keys and resulting euphoric climax in ‘Waterfalls’, as this is an ode to Generation Y, the modern day “baby boom” generation who were born in the 1980s and 1990s…and the ones who struggle in today’s society.

Sounds like: Icona Pop, NONONO

Newcomer YOUTH (aka songwriter and producer Steven Mudd) is also one half of the critically acclaimed indie-pop duo, Golden Coast.

His debut single ‘Fire’ is energetic from the get go, with a steady drum beat and finger clicks throughout, perfectly blending with the anthemic feel of the song.

We don’t hear very much Swiss indietronica, but namaka‘s new song ‘Cellophane’ proves we should be listening to more.

Their music is both feminine and masculine; production both analogical and digital, as the band tackle the conflict of man vs machine in the most delicate and rough ways possible.

Western Scene – Strange But True

Western Scene

Do not be deceived, ‘Strange But True’ by Western Scene is not a Christmas song, despite the countless bells and chimes in the song. Instead, it is a call for decent music.

Formed by front man Tom Pritchard in Los Angeles, Western Scene is an indie rock band through and through, spending years self-producing music that has been written and recorded in bedrooms and studios across the coast.

‘Strange but True’ is out now via Grand Jury Music.

Lake Jons – Colors

Lake Jons

We are blown away by Finnish trio Lake Jons‘s new song ‘Colors’.

Much like their other releases, ‘Colors’ effortlessly combines delicate guitar progressions (with some banjo thrown in there for good measure) with vintage rock beats and soulful vocals. Who would have thought that could work?!

‘Colors’ is the lead single from Lake Jon’s self-titled debut album, out on 19 January via AntiFragile Music, which was recorded in an isolated cabin in the woods – also a running theme throughout the album.

Sounds like: Paul Simon, Ásgeir, Band Of Horses, Bon Iver, Nick Mulvey

Jake Alder – Chasin’ Time Feat LKA

Well this is a great collaboration, isn’t it? The UK meets Finland as Jake Alder invites LKA to join him in ‘Chasin’ Time’.

The track is a sultry number with epic synth surges and fulfilling drum beats, all of which create an emotional experience. LKA’s intentions when writing the lyrics for ‘Chasin’ Time’ were to help her advance forward in all endeavours, and this song proves that both parties are doing just that.

Disclosure: I am Jake Alder’s publicist at the time of writing.

The track is being offered as a free download from Jake’s SoundCloud page.

The Wrecking Queens by Päiviö Omwami

Playing together since 2004, The Wrecking Queens are a tight-knit and highly energetic indie-pop band from Finland.

Playlist: Anni

Anni

Anni

New Finn on the block, Anni, writes empathetic, piano-laden music.

Her EP, ‘Redemption Street’ is out now and to celebrate, Anni has put together a playlist for us.

Alicia Keys: In Common

Alicia Keys has always been one of my big role models. She’s a goddess. Once again she shows us her musical genius and eloquence with her new single.

D’Angelo: Another Life

What is there not to love in this song? I play the piano part at home on top of the track and imagine I’m jamming with his band.

Laura Mvula: She

It had been a long time without hearing any new songs that really touched me. Those periods are terrible. You don’t want to overuse the songs you love yet you can’t find anything that feels honest and fresh. Then I heard this and listened it on repeat for days. Learned to play it to understand what’s the magic behind it. This song brought me to life again.

Banks: Warm Water (Snakehips remix)

Just love this.

Låpsley: Falling Short

She’s super cool. If you haven’t heard of her, you should.

James Vincent McMorrow: Higher Love

James Vincent McMorrow’s cover of Steve Windwood 80’s hit breaks my heart every time I hear it. Also, just check out the lyrics. The original song bears such a beautiful message.

Tony Allen: Calling

After hearing Alicia’s new single I had to go back to some classic afrobeat songs. This still brings shivers. (P.s. If you’ve ever listened to early Jamiroquai, you might realise where they got their influences.)

Sérgio Mendes feat. Fergie: Look Of Love

Even more that afrobeat, I love Brazilian music. It’s the combination of dancable rhythms and big, beautiful melodies that simply gets me. The legendary Sérgio Mendes collaborated with Black Eyed Peas and this classic jazz standard is one of the songs I especially love.

Caribou: Can’t Do Without You

I quite rarely like this kind of music. Except Caribou!

Stevie Wonder: Overjoyed

Stevie is greatest inspiration of my music that will ever be. His voice is just otherworldy. And his songs.

Sounds like: Karen O, Feist, VÉRITÉ, Lorde

Runaway Zoo – Just To Be Somebody

Runaway Zoo

Runaway Zoo

Runaway Zoo are a “dream big” four-piece from Finland comprised of school friends, Juska Reiman, Miika Mettiäinen, Jesse Hiltunen and Sampo Winberg.

They cite influences from varying musical genres and refuse to pigeonhole themselves.

Although ‘Just To Be Somebody’ fits nicely into the “electro pop” corner, this is just one point on the band’s triangle.

Sounds like: Hurts, Boxed In

Terminé – Sideways

Terminé

Terminé

Finnish duo Terminé is a collab between DJ/producer Anton Sonin and singer/songwriter, Ben Andreas.

Together the pair has created an EP that sits at the intersection of indie-rock and dance music, self-described as “new-wave indie-rock meets the infamous Panorama Bar at Berghain…influenced by the moody and epic atmosphere of french indie music, combined with 4/4 beats of kinda early-morning afterhours somewhere in East Berlin”.

Their new EP is called ‘Sideways’. The title track is full of echoing guitar riffs and a repetitive xylophonic bassline, with glimpses of tropical-house for good measure.

Their five-track EP is out now via Youth Control.

Sounds like: Roisto, Paperwhite
