Playlist: Four Authors

Four Authors

Four Authors

Four Authors are making a bit of an impact in the UK music scene, having already been described as “pop rock at it’s finest” by BBC Introducing.

With that in mind, the boys have put together a wicked playlist for Indietronica. Listen below.

Panic! At The Disco – I Write Sins Not Tragedies

One of their earliest songs and one of their best, although they do keep consistently writing phenomenal music.

Twenty One Pilots – Heavy dirty soul

We love this band for their unique way to blend so many genres of music together including two of our favourites, Rock and Rap.

Fall Out Boy – My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark

We’ve grown up being a huge fan of this band right back from their early punk beginnings. One of our favourite things about this band is their ever evolving sound. We could have chosen any number of songs by FOB but this one best represents their modern pop rock anthems they have had a habit of writing over the past two albums.

One Republic – Counting Stars

Lead single from an album we found while traveling, this song is a pop rock masterpiece and the soundtrack to an amazing time in our lives.

Ed Sheeran – I See Fire

He’s one of the greatest musical talents of the last few years. We’ve been listening to him way before he made it massive and he’s still writing brilliant songs. We love how I See Fire sounds so HUGE with so little actually on it.

Ward Thomas – Carry You Home

Reminds us of American country rock and being in Nashville. Big Chorus!

Taylor Swift – I Know Places

Every one of Taylor’s songs are so musically different, probably down to the different producers and writers she collaborates with. We chose this because of the fantastic melodies she uses in the vocals.

One Republic – Wherever I Go

Pretty much every song Ryan Tedder writes is a lesson on how to write a hit track.

Twenty One Pilots – Stressed out

They’re putting out music that is different and mix different styles in their tracks really well.

Their album is out now via ALYA RECORDS.

Sounds like: Fun, Fall Out Boy, Imagine Dragons, Temper Trap

Playlist: Secret Weapons

Secret Weapons

Secret Weapons

Brooklyn based, 80’s promoters, Secret Weapons have just shared self-titled their EP. But to top that off, they have also put together a playlist of epic proportions for our lovely readers.

Pasion Pit – Take a Walk
Sonically passion pit stood out from the rest. Buzz saw synths and joyful chord progressions with contradictory lyrics.

Jack Ü – To Ü (feat. Aluna George)
This track ushered in an era of production and a million imitates.

Fleetwood Mac – The Chain
This song is simply thrilling to us. A slow burn filled with so much dramatic tension. It does so much with so little, and builds to final climax like a masterpiece.

Tom Tom Club – Genius of Love
This song redefined corky to us. It’s got such a killer groove and the most playful melodies.

Talking Heads – Once In A Lifetime
Pure emotion. Soul and personality spew from every singe vocal line and instrument.

Joe Cocker – With A Little Help From My Friends
An incredible reimagination of this song. you could bring it around a million times and it keeps feeling better and better. the choir harmonies and live energy give us chills.

Selena Gomez – Hands To Myself
Simple pop bliss, haunting guitars.

The Killers – I Can’t Stay
A simple sentiment goes such a long way on this one. Also part of a larger album that we admire greatly.

Shamir – On The Regular
The dopest beat and the dopest visuals. You can’t imagine any other music video for this song.

Coldplay – Lovers In Japan
A beautiful love story, and some of the most heart-racing melodic beauty you can achieve.

The Strokes – You Only Live Once
The crunch of these guitars has influences us heavily. a solid strokes classic from a classic strokes album.

Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg – still d.r.e
Hip hop classic, pure and simple.

Cheryl Lynn – Got To Be Real
All around an incredible song.

Fifth Harmony – Sledgehammer
Every girl in the group is showcased beautifully here. The perfect girl group.

Queen – Another One Bites The Dust
Pure classic. We admire queen greatly for stepping into so many different genres. it’s hard to pick a favorite Queen song, but my god this is certainly Danny’s. This is also Danny’s favorite song of all time.

Interview with Shallows

Shallows

Shallows

If Katy Perry had a child with Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy, it would be called Shallows.

The Los Angeles-based duo was formed by singer, Dani Poppitt, and guitarist/producer, Marshall Gallagher, following a meet at an out of control house party.

Their debut single, ‘Summer Sucks’, is a lament of a tired relationship under the slow crushing weight of last year’s Californian heat wave.

We caught up with the duo and discussed the hot weather in Los Angeles, and the array of their musical influences.

Good to meet you Shallows. Tell us more!

MG:  Hi, thanks for talking to us!  We’re a brand new band from the heart of LA, just two friends trying to write some killer songs and have fun.  We’ve been writing together for awhile now and we’re both involved in plenty of other projects, but when we wrote this song it seemed only fitting that we should keep it for ourselves and build a band around this sound.

You’re a new act. How are you going to distinguish yourselves from the competition?

MG:  There are a lot of guy/girl pop duos out there, especially in this city.  It’s going to be difficult to stick out, but what we lack in notoriety we make up for in musicianship.  I think the songs speak for themselves, Summer Sucks is just a little taste of what we’ve got brewing.

DP:  We’re going to distinguish ourselves with well written pop songs.  By marrying shoegaze and indie lyrical content with music that Katy Perry could get behind.  Our songs will dig their way into the heads of our competitors and live there for weeks.

Your debut single is called ‘Summer Sucks’. Does the temperature in Los Angeles have an negative impact on your music, as well as a positive one?

MG:  Haha… it doesn’t affect the music as much as it affects my sleep quality.  We did most of our writing in my apartment this summer and it was crazy hot (like, sometimes it would get hotter in there than it was outside, and it was hovering around 90 every day), but that may have actually made our material more visceral.  I guess there was this desperate urgency to nail takes and crank out quality stuff as quickly as possible, in order to get the hell out of my sauna.  Performance gets better sometimes under pressure, right?

DP:  Temperature changes the state of matter; it has an effect on the mind.  Hot or cold, we use what we can as inspiration.

Describe your sound in three words.

DP:  Moody Glitter Pop.

MG: All the feelings.

Where do you cite your musical influences from?

DP:  The Beatles, Smashing Pumpkins, Hole, Katy Perry.

MG:  I honestly don’t listen to anything that sounds remotely like Shallows.  Dani gives me shit all the time because I have no idea who is killing it in the Pop world right now.  I grew up on classic rock, 90s alternative and emo for the most part, and I’m a guitar player by trade… so I’m a sucker for anything heavy and pretty.  My favorite band of all time is The Smashing Pumpkins.

We love new music at Indietronica. What new music are you listening to?

DP: Too much Justin Bieber

MG:  I’m really digging on Basement and Superhumanoids.  There’s this Paerish song called “Undone”  I’m totally obsessed with.  Also just started listening to Schoolboy Q.

‘Summer Sucks’ is self released and available to purchase on iTunes now.

Sounds like: Lorde, GEMS, Monogem, Paperwhite, Ace Of Base, Susanne Sundfør
