Playlist: Captain E / Eskimo Recordings

Captain E

Belgium electronic label, Eskimo Recordings, have just shared ‘The Red Collection’, the 6th instalment in the label’s colour series it brings together the best of the label’s recent releases with unreleased gems from their friends and family including Satin Jackets, Atella, This Soft Machine and many more.

Label manager, Captain E, has put together a special playlist for us to celebrate the release of ‘The Red Collection’.. Listen below.

TSM aka This Soft Machine – Absence Of Rhythm

This Soft Machine was introduced to the idea of dance music and rock music being completely compatible, when he lived in London and had people like Erol Alkan and Rory Phillips dj’ing at Trash. I lived in Gent where the Eskimo parties took place, with The Glimmers and 2manydjs aka Soulwax playing there. 2manydjs had a radio show called Hank The Dj, which was the foundation of As Heard On Radio Soulwax. No need to add that the way they blended different musical genres into one had a big impact on me. TSM is one of my favourite dj’s around as well, just listen to his mixtapes.

Jagwar Ma – Uncertainty (Ewan Pearson Remix)

Ewan Pearson produced the Jagwar Ma albums, and also did this remix of Uncertainty. He’s one of my favourite producers around, so I was very happy that he loved the idea of doing a remix of the NTEIBINT x Stella single ‘Hide In’ last year and boy, did he deliver! Back to Jagwar Ma: loved the Howling album, loved the Uncertainty track, loved the remix. There’s a dub mix as well, but for your listening pleasure, here’s the ‘vocal’ mix. How can you look so gloomy?

Horixon feat. Else Born – Colours

Always happy when two Eskimo artists work on some music together. Andrew & Joe from Horixon have other projects (Monarchy, Joe Ashworth), while Else Born is Turid Alida from Norwegian twisted pop sensation Philco Fiction. A perfect marriage between electronica, indie and pop. Fell in love with the Colours demo instantly, made me think of other big acts I like a lot. Approved by Stella McCartney, and both artists are on The Red Collection.

Blacknecks — Don’t Dream It Be It (Prins Thomas version)

As featured on Prins Thomas presents Paradise Goulash. All credits go to Thomas (and Blacknecks of course). It started with this great concept of him as a chef making “Paradise Goulash”, and ended with him doing his very own version of the original track so it was ready to be played in his amazing sets. Also love the track title!

Nese Karaböcek – Yali Yali (Todd Terje Edit)

First played in Todd Terje’s Essential Mix in 2013, a hypnotic slice of Turkish disco. The original already had a hint of the ‘Groove Is In The Heart’ vibe.

Moscoman – Fernandez

Another track I loved instantly. A bassline (and more) to dance to. Play!

Hermigervill – Brewed in Belgium

Icelandic producer with a strong Belgian connection, even speaks a bit of Dutch. I first heard of him when I saw this video featuring a lot of Belgian beers, then I met him in Oslo and now he’s the opening act on The Red Collection.

Bolis Pupil – Wèi?

A bit in the same musical vibe as the Hermigervill track perhaps, out on the DEEWEE label run by Soulwax. Just like Eskimo, their label is Gent based, so we run into each other quite frequently. Bolis Pupil is a musician from Gent who also plays in other bands like Hong Kong Dong and the fictional band The Shitz, who were on the Belgica OST.

Tony Wilson – Hangin’ Out In Space

One of the many, many highlights on Psychemagik’s curated Ritual Chants release, that ended up in Rough Trade’s Compilations of the Year, after being Rough Trade’s Album of the Week and Rough Trade’s Album of the Month at the end of 2016. When Dan from Psychemagik sent me the track, I played it a couple of times in a row. Could listen to it all day, or all night long.

Atella – The Monster

I actually think the latest Atella single featuring Froder beats what Röyksopp is doing lately, but don’t tell them. Fun to know that both Atella and Röyksopp are great producer duos from Norway. For indietronica I chose the debut single from Atella called The Monster. Stunning video by Chris Ullens too.

Transvolta – Disco Computer

Hello everybody. I am the future. Dan Lacksman at work. Pretty incredible how this tiny country called Belgium had such an impact on the international scene. When you get the chance, watch the documentary called The Sound Of Belgium, and check the playlist on Spotify if you want to dig deeper. Pump up the jam?

Lata Ramasar – Greatest Name That Lives (Alessandro Adriani Remix)

Released in the year that both I and the very first TR808 drum machine were born. Amazing remix, hard to find. Always love how the crowd reacts to this one when they hear it for the first time. (Same goes for the Yali Yali edit.) The original is great as well.

Ten Fé – Elodie

Ten Fé - Elodie

Ten Fé – Elodie

The bosses are back in town; romantic indie rock duo, Ten Fé.

Their latest release, ‘Elodie’ is a beautiful and modern love song. As the name suggests, ‘Elodie’ is lyrical and melodious.

Ben and Leo’s vocals play off one another’s throughout the track. As on ‘In The Air’, Ben is on lead vocal once more, narrating in a rich Springsteen baritone a conversation between two lovers.

Written the night before the band left London for Berlin to record with producer Ewan Pearson (Jagwar Ma, M83, The Rapture), it is the first track to be recorded featuring the complete Ten Fé live line-up – with Rob Shipley on bass and Luca Romano on drums.

‘Elodie’ will be released by Bad Life.

Sounds like: Bruce Springsteen, The Rapture, CliffLight, War on Drugs, The Cure
