Apsley – Fear

Apsley - Fear

We wrote about Idaho-based Apsley (aka Jacob Apsley) earlier this year and we’re excited to share his latest release, ‘Fear’.

The track has more of an demanding tone than Sold, reminding us of an early The 1975 with its muted guitar riffs and echoey, falsetto vocals.

Apsley – Sold

Idaho-based Apsley (aka Jacob Apsley) releases his debut track, ‘Sold’, and it’s a stunner.

Originally a drummer (he started at the tender age of six), Jacob later picked up the piano, guitar and singing skills that we today witness on ‘Sold’.

‘Sold’ is about seeing life as it really is, and not being shackled to the conforms of society. With that in mind, we recommend you whack this song on your headphones and go for a walk outside.

MIAMIGO – Last Summer

MIAMIGO - Soda Lime Love

MIAMIGO – Soda Lime Love

Last time we spoke about dark pop Brighton-based duo, MIAMIGO, they were just preparing for The Great Escape.

After a killer performance, and a successful summer, they are back with the announcement of their ‘Soda Lime Love’ EP.

The duo wrote and recorded the EP at their studio in Brighton with the four tracks pulling together a love story. Lead singer, Liam explains “We named the EP ‘Soda Lime Love’ because soda-lime is the cheapest and most common kind of glassware, compared to crystal. It’s essentially a cheap knock-off – something that looks like the real deal from afar, but on closer inspection is more like counterfeit. The EP, in order, is the stages of a failed love story; ”What I Want’ starts the EP with flaring libido, almost like the honeymoon period of a relationship, followed by the ballad-y, puppy love of ‘Seeing Two’, then the breakdown of the couple in ‘Nobody’, and the bittersweet conclusion and ultimate failing in ‘Last Summer’.

MIAMIGO – Hard To Love

MIAMIGO – Hard To Love

Indie duo MIAMIGO has released their sophomore track, ‘Hard To Love’.

The duo describe themselves on their Soundcloud and Facebook page as; “Miamigo’s dark, twisted pop tales of the human condition examine both the bad and the beautiful air in life, laying bare the despair that hides behind the façade…”

Intriguing.

‘Hard To Love’ is taken from their forthcoming debut EP of the same name, which is out on 14 June via their own label, Indian Hop Recordings.

Those traveling to Brighton’s The Great Escape this year can catch their debut performance at Patterns on 14 May at 6:30pm.

Tesla Boy – Strong

Tesla Boy by Jurij Treskow

Tesla Boy by Jurij Treskow

Tesla Boy is a Russian four-piece who divide their time between New York and Moscow.

Latest track ‘Strong’ is a soaring 80’s inspired anthem with guitar riffs Prince would be proud of and an infectious bass line Cut Copy would love.

“It’s really important to me to be a person who can make a connection between the cultures – western and eastern,” muses frontman and principal songwriter, Sevidov, about why Tesla Boy’s music has the ability to resonate with listeners. “I’m from Russia, and I travel all over the world, and I sing for different people from different countries. My mission is to unite our cultures. It’s very important for me.”

Tesla Boy remind us of Chromeo back in 2007 stirred up with a bit of Depeche Mode. The band is so quirky, it’s cool!

Sounds like: Chromeo, Cut Copy, Depeche Mode, Prince, The Editors, White Lies, Interpol, Simple Minds, The Eurythmics, Bronski Beat, The Naked and Famous, Delphic

An Interview With Fenech-Soler

Fenech-Soler at Concorde 2, Brighton

Fenech-Soler at Concorde 2, Brighton

Indietronica watched Fenech-Soler in Brighton on their current tour. The band answered some questions before the gig:

1. Tell us how Fenech-Soler started.

Well Ross and I are brothers and Ross went to school with Dan. We started a band years ago and met Andrew at a local studio near our village. We were pretty awful to be fair. Andrew lived just down the road from us so I guess we just grew up in the same area and shared a mutual love of electronic music.

2. Sum up your sound in 3 words.

Umm, electronic, melodic and anything else that rhymes with ‘onic’…

3. Explain why ‘Rituals’ is different to your first, self-entitled album?

I think it represents us becoming comfortable with the space that we occupy within music. It’s always a challenge making the leap from your first album to your second and this period certainly tested us but we weren’t going to finish until we were happy with it. Rituals is a massive leap for us and I guess I feel it’s a more complete piece of a work. It has a start, middle and an end.

4. What is your favourite track off the new album?

‘Somebody’ is a song that was quite quick to write and record. It came quite late in the process but it’s always a lot of fun to play live.

5. Where do you cite your musical influences from?

We predominantly write electronic music but we listen to quite a range. We’ve always had a love for straight up pop music. Pop music that has integrity and character because pop has never been a dirty word for us. It just means that you connect universally. Pop music from the late 70’s early 80’s influences us but then we listen to a lot of current electronic music.

6. We love discovering new music at Indietronica. What new music are you listening to at the moment?

I’m currently listening to Maribou State at the moment. I really like their productions and sounds. Really forward thinking. Duologue are also an act that have brilliant songs. They’re currently on tour with us and it’s a real pleasure watching them every night. Great musicians.

7. What is next for Fenech-Soler, once you have finished your tour?

America is the next place we’re planning on visiting. It’s been a while since we played in the states so we’re planning to release our first single there and get on the road.

The gig was one of the best gigs I’ve been to recently. As soon as they stepped onto the stage, the crown instantly started clapping their hands and cheering. It was refreshing to hear Ben’s voice sound a bit more grizzly than his usual clean sound. It’s probably more due to the extensive touring the guys have been doing lately, but I liked it.

The band played a mixture of songs from the incredible album, ‘Rituals’, such as ‘Last Forever’ and the new track ‘In Our Blood’, as well as the classics including ‘Lies’ and ‘Stop and Stare’.

It was a mixed up and stripped down performance with a honorary large drum, some dirty bass, synths, and hypnotic lighting chucked into the mix.

I just wish this tour could last forever and I am already at the front of the queue for their next gig.

Suzuki Method – Sherbet

Suzuki Method

Suzuki Method

Let us introduce you to Salford’s indie dance five-piece, Suzuki Method, who are brothers and founders, Adam and Glen Leishman; Michael Mathews; David Boyd; and Ben Hounslow.

The band came together during the Salford riots to create their debut EP ‘Native’, which is produced by David Tolan (Delphic, Primal Scream) and Jim Spencer (The Doves, The Vaccines, New Order)

Mixing up a concoction of classic post punk vocals with some indie swagger, the clear musical influences from the well-known above producers give Suzuki Method their distinctive, yet mature electronic sound. Suzuki Method also cite influences from other such bands as Daft Punk and The Smiths, as can be heard in their anthemic ‘we dare-you-not-to-dance’ screaming guitar lines.

The video for lead single ‘Sherbet’ was directed by Bafta film maker Pete Travis (Omagh, Vantage Point, Judge Dredd) who agreed to do so after seeing the band perform at London’s Barfly. Set on the Manchester rooftops, it is a fast paced and beautifully shot affair. The preview for the video is at The Black Lion in Manchester on 12 October 2013.

Sherbet’s jangling guitars provide a pitch perfect soundtrack to vocalist Adam’s forlorn tale of youth in crisis:

We are also loving the brand new Swiss Lips remix of Sherbet:

Suzuki Method are tipped for big things, having received BBC introducing, Amazing radio and XFM airplay.

The debut EP is released on 20 October 2013 via A1(M) Records.

Sounds like: Delphic, New Order, Depeche Mode, Pink Floyd
