Australian-based Hockey Dad is a musical project formed by lifelong best mates Zach Stephenson (vocals/guitar) and Billy Fleming (drums). Having met in early childhood as next-door neighbours, the two turned to music to combat the stillness of small-town coastal life, taking their name from an episode of The Simpsons, and jamming in Dad’s back shed.

Their delectably rough take on scuzzy indie-rock is reminiscent of the Seattle grunge days, and coincidentally their upcoming third album ‘Brain Candy’ – out on 31 July via Farmer & The Owl / BMG – was produced in Seattle with John Goodmanson (Sleater-Kinney, Bikini Kill, Death Cab For Cutie, Blonde Redhead), and mixed by Troy Glessner (Alice in Chains, The Blood Brothers, Foo Fighters).

British art-pop trio KYOTI, share ‘Citadel’, the sixth single from their expansive ‘Project Twelve’, which sees the band release one track every month for a year.

Their disparate and captivating storytelling collides into rich soundscapes of jazz, folk, and pop-inspired synths and beats, interlaced with thoughtful lyricism.

Lyrically ‘Citadel’ considers personal issues and broader political ideas, both continuing themes throughout KYOTI’S work to date.

Lead singer, Ed says of the track, “In the turbulent times we are currently living through it can be so easy to shut ourselves off. Rather than engage with what is going on across the planet and in society, whether that’s climate change, homelessness, or mental health issues – instead people tend to seek comfort and shelter from those closest to us.

“The phrase “I need a citadel” sits at the heart of this song. I was thinking about how bombarded we all are in the modern world – by the news, social media, and constant expectations of success and progress – but that sometimes you just want to hang out with mates and loved ones, safe in the knowledge that there’s no judgement. For me that feels like a citadel and I think a lot of people are probably in need of that too.”

‘Project Twelve’ will be showcased in its entirety via a string of London shows early 2020 ahead of the final release completing the series in September.

She grew up in both Chicago and San Diego to Ukrainian parents who only spoke Russian in the house. At the tender age of 5, golda taught herself how to sing opera. She wrote her first song in 7th grade – ‘Genocide in Darfur,’ inspired after learning about the horrific happenings occurring in Darfur.

German-based indie pop/rock band, LIONLION has just shared their new single, ‘Language’.

Centred around identical twins Michael & Matthias Rückert, their music is always visually-focused and cinematic in a minimalistic manner.

The video for ‘Language’ displays the highs and lows of the twins, and is a highly explosive, yet beautiful mixture.

Set in the ‘Haus des Volkes’, the “people’s house” and a symbol of the conflict within Germany during the Cold War, situated within the restricted zone of the inner-German border, it is the largest Bauhaus ensemble in Thuringia. Its architecture embodies functionality and thought-out design and echoes a more modernist Wes Anderson approach. In the video, this rational and clear visualisation is juxtaposed with the brothers’ emotional turmoil.

Expect their EP, ‘Rise & Fall’, to be out in October ahead of their second album ‘Perspective’, coming in spring 2020.

Fyfe – Belong (Feat. Kimbra)

Fyfe is the musical project of Paul Dixon, and he returns with a seriously strong new track called ‘Belong’, featuring Kimbra.

It is the first single taken off Fyfe’s second album ‘The Space Between’, which is released on 9 June. The concept behind the album is it begins in a hospital ward and ends at a funeral home.

‘Belong’ was written following Paul’s experience with the separate and sudden deaths of two young friends, then his grandmother passing away, and very quickly a family friend, but also him becoming an uncle three times.

Fyfe describes ‘Belong’ as,

“the desire to find purpose in a transient life. A relationship can be helpful or a hinderance in terms of understanding who you are and ‘Belong’ is documenting someone starting to pose those questions, rather than providing the answers…Kimbra is a real creative force. Our voices are presenting the same narrative rather than a conversation between two members of a relationship.”

Fyfe will be playing a headline show at London’s Omeara on 4 May.

A juxtaposing theme in Bad Wave‘s new single, ‘1955’; a “nostalgia for the future” if you will.

Much like the melodies within the song, ‘1955’ is split between the progression of the past and hope for the future with it’s echoey harmonies and rocky guitar riffs.
