Playlist: Chelsea Lankes

Chelsea Lankes

It’s not long until the end of the year, and what better way to see 2017 through with a playlist from Chelsea Lankes. This one goes out to all the ladies, and is probably one of the best playlists we’ve ever had! Lucky you!

“Here are some favorites over the last couple months including songs from favorite albums this year: SZA, Phoebe Bridgers, YOUTH, Lorde and Wolf Alice. Also I put a few singles from female pop artists I love and respect! To be enjoyed while driving at night, at low key parties, showering or anywhere you might sing really loud alone. 🙂”

…And whilst we have you, give Chelsea’s new track a spin too.

Sounds like: MUNA, Wet, Evvy, Ghost Beach, Kyla La Grange, Ji Nilsson, Tove Styrke, Carousel, Kitten, Nina, Mikky Ekko, Remmi, Cappa

Secret Weapons – My Blue Heaven

Secret Weapons

It turns out Secret Weapons have been keeping a few things from us, the unfortunate news of lead singer Gerry Lange being ill. Whilst touring with bands like Weezer and Panic! at the Disco, the band kept Gerry’s health struggles quiet and as Danny Rocco says “strangely, the album became about making the album.”

Their latest single ‘My Blue Heaven’ embodies that very struggle.

Sounds like: Future Islands, The 1975, Lionel Richie, The Levity, The Island Club, Ghost Beach, Backstreet Boys, LANY, Great Good Fine Ok, The Knocks, Dagny

Alexander Bernard – Wax

Alexander Bernard by Courtney Kimmey

Los Angeles-based producer/songwriter Alexander Bernard gives us a taste of his musical swagger on ‘Wax’.

Like wax melting in the sun, Alexander offers us warm bass lines of nu-disco and psych, synth sounds of pop with his soulful pipes.

Listen below.

Elizabritz – The Other Side

Elizabritz - The Other Side

Elizabritz is an electro pop/R&B duo composed of producer ‘Fantom’ from North Carolina and singer Rachael Eff from Los Angeles.

Their offbeat track ‘Other Side’ reminds us of an early Clean Bandit, and considers being becoming complacent with a long term partner.

Paris and Simo – Come As You Are Feat. Karen Harding

NOVAA x LO – Go There

NOVAA x LO

A collaborative album sounds exciting to us, especially when it’s written and produced by rising singer/songwriter/producer NOVAA and UK bedroom producer LO.

‘Go There’ is the third single from their ‘LIGHTS’ album, and “is about empty promises and letting go of someone that doesn’t really want you. It’s the moment you realize that you’re put on hold and that it’s not a romance but a game. The bubble you lived in pops and you find yourself playing a role and being someone that you don’t want to be.”

The album is out now on 29 September via Majestic Casual.

Sounds like: FØRTE, Mura Masa, Aurora, Diplo, AlunaGeorge, Grimes

Love Ssega – Hot Electrolytes

Love Ssega

Hot damn! Love Ssega is back with ‘Hot Electrolytes’.

The Kat Hassan-directed video bursts with colour, mirroring the warm tones throughout the track.

Explaining the track, Love Ssega says “This track has hopefully raised two eyebrows and a wry smile. To me it feels like a sledgehammer of passion, colour and sound, as that’s what I was going for. If it’s not surprising, it’s not exciting.”

‘Hot Electrolytes’ is taken from Love Ssega’s forthcoming ‘Emancipation!’ EP, which is set for release later this summer.

LIV DAWSON

Liv Dawson

Lovely Londoner, Liv Dawson, is one of our favourite newcomers from 2016.

The sound and emotional depth of the late teen prove that she is undeniably wise and confident beyond her years, and it’s therefore no wonder that she’s been picked to play Wildlife amongst such other great acts.

ELKKA – Try

ELKKA

ELKKA

Big up upcoming producer/singer/songwriter/DJ, ELKKA and her new video for ‘Try’.

Combining elements of pop, garage, and electronica with what sounds like samples of the Street Fighter game, the video is equally as complex. It has been directed by Adrian Ardelean and is the first in a trilogy where each EP will be accompanied by an intimate video.

‘Try’, co-produced with Pop Morrison, has been taken from ELKKA’s debut EP, ‘Her’, out now.

“This series of EPs are a lyrical documentary about a pivotal moment in my life. The series follows my experiences of meeting the first girl I ever dated. HER. It was completely intoxicating and for a brief moment it felt like it could have been more than just lust but of course, the drama and chaos she brought came later which you will hear all about in second and third part of the series – THEM and US.’’

Sounds like: Clean Bandit, The xx, Hot Chip, Crystal Fighters, Jamie xx

Playlist: Saro

SARO

SARO

Los Angeles-based artist, Saro, tells us not to fall in love on his SoundCloud page, but it’s too late as we already have.

He has just dropped his ‘In Loving Memory’ EP (produced by Robin Hannibal (Rhye, Jessie Ware, Jamie Woon, Quadron) and it’s seven tracks of well-crafted pop, and to celebrate, we’ve asked him to put together a playlist.

His chosen theme is “Sleepwalking & Daydreaming”.

Katie Dey – Fear O’ the Light
I learned about the mysterious Katie Dey this past summer and she has become one of my favorites. Her album Flood Network is perfect.

Okay Kaya – I’m Stupid (But I Love You)
Kaya gives me everything I’ve ever wanted lyrically and melodically. I’m an addict.

Temples – Certainty
I love the psychedelic production and sweeter than candy melodies. Temples puts on the best live show too.

Jenny Hval – Period Piece
I get lost in the beauty of the vocal pads. I also love how the guitar is reminiscent of Morse Code.

iamamiwhoami – Sever
Iamamiwhoami has given me endless sonic and visual inspiration over the years. They have 3 full length visual albums that every artist must see.

Moses Sumney – Seeds
Moses has the voice of a god. It can melt butter, too.

TR/ST – Sulk
TR/ST has been one of my favorite bands for years. I have a man crush on Robert Alfons.

Darondo – Didn’t I
So much pain and longing in his falsetto. I can’t decide whether to dance or cry.

Wild Nothing – Chinatown
An all time favorite. “We’re not happy til we’re running away”.

Portishead – Machine Gun
Probably the most riveting production I’ve ever heard. Beth Gibbons performs a haunting vocal that moves me to the core.

Listen to Saro below.

Sounds like: Aquilo, Jack Garratt, Draper, Clean Bandit, Years & Years

Bodebrixen

Danish indie pop outfit, Bodebrixen, are bringing Spanish guitar back, and it’s sounding pretty damn good.

Sounds like: Cut Copy, Summer Heart, Day Wave, Clean Bandit, Roosevelt, Tough Alliance

Premiere: Techniques – Heinous Love

Techniques - Heinous Love

Techniques – Heinous Love

Techniques is the project of Manchester-based multi-instrumentalist, James Mulholland.

Like with all good electronic producers, James started creating and recording music in his bedroom, laying down drums, bass lines, guitars, synths and vocals all using one microphone and ‘whatever else was lying around’.

He has since released music on KitsunÊ Music and electronic rumors.

Techniques is now set to share a fine slice of electro-pop, just in time for the summer.

‘Heinous Love’ is a juxtaposing slur of bittersweet vocals against floor-filling and driving synths. It has been produced by Mark Ralph (Hot Chip, Digitalism, Years & Years, Clean Bandit, Hot Natured, Foxes).

Techniques is also crowdfunding a vinyl release. Click here for more info and to support.

The track is out tomorrow.

Sounds like: Hot Chip, Digitalism, Hot Natured, Holy Ghost!, Miami Horror, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs

Alpines by Cyrus Mahboubian

Alpines by Cyrus Mahboubian

London electronic duo, Alpines, are back with the sultry video for ‘Completely’.

Continuing to bleed creativity, Alpines have managed to toe the delicate balance between commercial melodic sensibilities on the one hand (with big, bold and relatable vocals), and cerebral leftfield sounds on the other.

Watch below.

Sounds like: Jamie xx, Kiesza, Jessie Ware, Clare Maguire, Years & Years, Clean Bandit, Gorgon City, London Grammar, Disclosure, ASTR, Ballet School, SOHN, Banks, Shura, The Maccabees
