Shango SK – Sleeping On My Own

Shango SK

Brit-pop meets R&B isn’t a combination of genres that we usually come across, but we’re so glad that we have. Shango SK has a lot to answer for.

Raised in Stockport, the fast-rising prodigious talent takes cues from the melting pot of sounds that he’s been surrounded with growing-up. Citing Manchester legends Oasis as one of his main influences, he’s also quick to list Future and Bon Iver as guiding forces too.

Fusing his love of alternative rock, emotive balladry, experimental hip hop and pop melodies Shango SK’s sound is hard to pin down. Speaking about new single, ‘Sleeping On My Own’, he explains,

“SOMO is about getting cold feet basically. Having my own time and space to think is vital for my happiness, unfortunately in this case I felt smothered. This is the aftermath of being innocent, going from being crazy in love with someone and having to constantly chase them for gratification, to the roles being flipped and them now chasing you and it being overwhelming.”

He also released ‘The Rush’, which you can listen to below:

Sounds like: Hazlett, Bon Iver, The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, Childish Gambino

Fyfe – Belong (Feat. Kimbra)

FYFE

Fyfe is the musical project of Paul Dixon, and he returns with a seriously strong new track called ‘Belong’, featuring Kimbra.

It is the first single taken off Fyfe’s second album ‘The Space Between’, which is released on 9 June. The concept behind the album is it begins in a hospital ward and ends at a funeral home.

‘Belong’ was written following Paul’s experience with the separate and sudden deaths of two young friends, then his grandmother passing away, and very quickly a family friend, but also him becoming an uncle three times.

Fyfe describes ‘Belong’ as,

“the desire to find purpose in a transient life. A relationship can be helpful or a hinderance in terms of understanding who you are and ‘Belong’ is documenting someone starting to pose those questions, rather than providing the answers…Kimbra is a real creative force. Our voices are presenting the same narrative rather than a conversation between two members of a relationship.”

Fyfe will be playing a headline show at London’s Omeara on 4 May.

Sounds like: RALPH, Miike Snow, Boxed In, James Blake, Childish Gambino, SOHN, The XX, Ellie Goulding, Bombay Bicycle Club, Death Cab For Cutie, London Grammar, Foals

Playlist: White To Gray

From White To Gray

From White To Gray

White To Gray is the project of Charlie Gray.

His ‘When You Go’ EP offers an array of cleverly packed beats with smooth grooves, retro riffs, and soul-enhancing vocals.

Charlie has put together a pretty special playlist for us, listen below.

Sampha – Blood On Me

I have been a huge fan of Sampha ever since his work with SBTRKT. I’ve been awaiting his first solo record for sometime now and after hearing this track from it I am sure it will be one of the best records of 2017. The sound he is creating by combining his voice and piano parts with his own unique production style is for me the most exciting and innovative thing happening in pop music today.

Soft Hair – Jealous Lies

Great funky, psychedelic record, awesome vocals and electronic instrumentation.

Childish Gambino – Redbone

So much sole in this tune. Love the delivery of the vocal and laid back rhythm section.

Grace Jones – She’s Lost Control (Long Version)

Only recently discovered this gem. Everything I hear by Grace Jones is always gold and this one certainly follows suit. So much energy especially towards the end of the track, great cover.

D’Angelo – Sugah Daddy

Piano and vocals are on point in this track, so much groove.

Tourist – Trust In You

I think it’s great when artists don’t conform to typical pop or electronic structures. This tracks a great example of how you can make a beautiful piece of music by thinking outside of the box.

Tycho – Receiver

Tycho’s ‘Past Is Prologue’ record was a huge part of my life when it was released. This track from his new album proves in my opinion that he is still one of the most forward thinking producers around today.

Ata Kak – Obaa Sima

I discovered ‘Awesome Tapas From Africa’ a while back and have been delving through all of the fantastic artists he has re-discovered ever since. This ones one of my favourite tracks he has been apart of. The vocals are so strong and the story of the origin of the track makes every listen all the more enjoyable.

Sounds like: Nimmo, Honne, Draper, Boxed In

MOK – The House VP

MOK

MOK

Brighton based alt-pop collective, MOK, return with ‘The House VP’; a nearly-twenty minute video that shows a brooding situation developing with a character that encounters different lives and stories throughout suburban Brighton.

Personal lyrics and a haunting video to match, MOK reflect back on “friendship, excess, mental health, everyday life, highs and lows”.

Sounds like: Nine Inch Nails, Die Antwoord, Professor Green, Childish Gambino, Rihanna, Harper

Fyfe – Stronger

Fyfe

Fyfe

Fyfe (aka Paul Dixon) returns with new track ‘Stronger’, the title track from his first EP of new material since last year’s acclaimed debut album, ‘Control’.

Pleasant and very matter of fact, don’t be deceived by ‘Stronger’, because it is no-less-intricate than his previous material.

Lyrically, ‘Stronger’ is based on the idea of sticking to your guns but also being (says Fyfe) “your own worst enemy. ‘Stronger’ is about engaging in that struggle to pick yourself up and keep going regardless of what is, or you may feel, is going on around you.”

Sounds like: Miike Snow, Boxed In, James Blake, Childish Gambino, SOHN, The XX, Ellie Goulding, Bombay Bicycle Club, Death Cab For Cutie, London Grammar, Foals

Interview with VÉRITÉ & Sober

VÉRITÉ

VÉRITÉ

Electro pop New Yorker, VÉRITÉ continues her musical journey with her latest endeavour; a cover of Childish Gambino‘s ‘Sober’.

It is about time we had a chat with her.

How and why did you start making music?

I started playing music when I was eight or nine. I started out covering The Cranberries, Four Non-Blondes and Nirvana. Eventually that progressed into writing and brought me here. I started because I was capable and loved the challenge of captivating people. Now the challenge has grown into attempts to create a world for people to live in and experience with me.

Describe your sound in three words.

driving dynamic pop.

Your new track is a cover of ‘Sober’ by Childish Gambino. This is your first cover to date. What were the reasons behind the cover?

I don’t particularly like the idea of arbitrarily covering songs. If I work on something that’s not my own writing, I want to be sure I can deliver an original, compelling interpretation that will do the song justice and feel natural to me. I love Childish Gambino and was totally invested in Because the Internet at the time. When I sent the cover demo to Zach Nicita, he was stoked and we worked to build a spinning, trippy soundscape.

Where do you cite your musical influences from?

I think there are a lot of influences. I grew up on 90’s alternative radio. I fell in love with Bright Eyes, Elliot Smith and Sufjan Stevens when I was fifteen. I studied jazz when I was seventeen and contemporary composition in undergrad. Other than those things, I’ve tried to listen to as much as I can and be open to letting everything influence me.

We love new music at Indietronica. What new music are you listening to?

Recently Son Lux, Sufjan Stevens, The Weeknd, Battles, and Florence and The Machine have been on repeat.

Listen to the cover below, and catch her in the UK before she heads off to this year’s Iceland Airwaves.

03/11/2015 – Underbelly (London)
04/11/2015 – Prince Albert (Brighton)
05/11/2015 – Castle Hotel (Manchester)
06/11/2015 – Iceland Airwaves (Reykjavik)

Fyfe – Solace

Fyfe (aka Paul Dixon) has just uploaded his new video for ‘Solace’.

You may recognise the track as it was originally self-released by Dixon, but it’s great to see it back with a bit of oomph in the form of a visually stunning video.

‘Solace’ is the lead single running into the release of his much-anticipated album debut ‘Control’ which is out in March.

Fyfe – Holding On

Fyfe

Fyfe

We previously described the 25-year old UK solo artist, Fyfe (aka Paul Dixon), as being comparable to Miike Snow with a hint of James Blake, which is why we are pleased to hear that he has released a moody video for new tune ‘Holding On’ as well as announcing the release of his long-awaited debut album, ‘Control’.

Still slightly following the recognisable disconsolate theme, ‘Holding On’ is more about a journey of self-discovery for the producer than any of his former tracks.
