Tkay Maidza – Follow Me

Tkay Maidza

We randomly discovered Australian artist Tkay Maidza on YouTube, and we’ve had her video for ‘Follow Me’ on repeat ever since.

Tkay’s urban-pop swagger immediately got our attention as the retro, Calvin Klein-styled video pursues Tkay in her mirrored boiler suit.

The Magnettes – So Bad

The Magnettes by Frida Bäcklund Thuneström-

Swedish fuck pop trio, The Magnettes are back with a sultry video for ‘So Bad’.

It explores “people’s fucked up double standards”, especially in the music industry. The song cleverly starts with a high school teacher style ramblings. The video follows suit, as the trio find themselves in a dummy-like state, trying to escape the patriarchy forced upon them.

It’s taken from their debut album, ‘Ugly Youth’, due for release on 30 June via DigSin.

Sounds like: Charli XCX, Icona Pop, Lana Del Rey

YONAKA – Wouldn’t Wanna Be Ya

YONAKA

Whilst watching YONAKA perform at The Great Escape this year, we decided that the band should best described as follows;

“If Gwen Stefani, Pat Benatar, Karen O and Charli XCX had a late night jamming session and Arctic Monkeys turned up with some cocaine, the end result would probably be YONAKA”

The Brighton locals’ latest single, ‘Wouldn’t Wanna Be Ya’ sums up this analogy, and has been produced by Ross Orton (Arctic Monkeys).

Sounds like: Gwen Stefani, Pat Benatar, Charli XCX, Karen O, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Drenge

WEIRDO – Sapphire

Weirdo by James Perolls

Weirdo by James Perolls

“Hey everybody. I’m the WEIRDO” declared Josh Christopher (formerly of Brighton duo, IYES) earlier today on his Facebook page.

We’ll let you into a little secret, we kind of already knew that WEIRDO was the project of the now Berlin-based producer, but it’s still exciting that he’s finally announced it to the world.

So now that the news is out, will we learn everything possible about the WEIRDO project through the realms of social media? Not quite.

Josh still appears to be maintaining some mystery, having slightly concealed his face on the dark blue track cover of new track ‘Sapphire’ (which also features some awesome drumming skills of Debbie Knox-Hewson (also Charli XCX‘s drummer)), and throughout the song, there is also an uncertainty as to whether the sapphire really is as beautiful as first thought.

Listen below.

Sounds like: Phil Collins, Metronomy
