Joywave – Somebody New

Ben Khan - 1000

Ben Khan – 1000

Hailing from Rochester, NY, infectious electro-rockers Joywave give a new lease of life to the track, ‘Somebody New’, which originally appeared on the five-piece’s EP last year.

‘Somebody New’ is an adrenaline fuelled anthem with a cool video.

They worked alongside director, Keith Schofield for the video, taking on the glitchy aesthetic and skateboarding fails of the games’ star riders on their journey through the streets of LA – paying homage to the infamous action sports idol’s and the best-selling 00’s computer games ‘Skate 3′ and ‘Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater’. The single has been selected by ‘X Games’ as one of their signature songs for 2015, with the X Game team even creating their own custom version of the video.

The debut LP ‘How Do You Feel Now?’ arrives on 25 May via Cultco Music/Hollywood Records. Pre-order here.

Sounds like: Small Pools, Carousel, Big Data, Duck Sauce,Little Daylight, Panama Wedding, Hot Chip, Penguin Prison, Bag Raiders, Ghost Beach

Day Wave – Nothing At All

Day Wave

Day Wave

Day Wave is the one-man recording project of 25-year-old Oakland based Jackson Phillips and one half of synth-pop duo Carousel.

The catchy indie pop debut track ‘Nothing At All’ is a confident undertaking from Phillips, who has yet to play a live show. Dreamy-lo-fi instrumentation and an upbeat arrangement decorated in contrasting self deprecating lyrics.

This will be first track taken from Phillips’s debut EP, set for release early next year.

Scavenger Hunt – Lost

Scavenger Hunt

Scavenger Hunt

Scavenger Hunt is Philadelphia-native and established music producer/composer Dan Mufson, and jaxx/folk singer Jill Lamoureux (who is one-half of the husband/wife duo Wing and Hollow).

The day after they met, the duo got to work by composing a track for a makeup commercial. They enjoyed the writing process so much that they decided to form Scavenger Hunt.

The name has been drawn from Mufson’s interpretation of the networking culture in L.A.

‘Lost’ is a real laid back treat with sunny panpipe sounds and illustrious glacial echos. It’s a track completely different to the scavenger hunt you would find in the city of L.A.

You can buy the single on iTunes now or download it for free on their website when you sign up via email. Scavenger Hunt’s first EP is set for a 2014 release.

We also can’t get enough of their cover of ‘California Waiting’ by the Kings of Leon:

Sounds like: Goldroom, Grimes, Ladyhawke, HAERTS, I BREAK HORSES, Carousel, Washed Out

Metronomy – I’m Aquarius

Long-standing indietronica artists Metronomy are originally from Devon, UK, and have been making music together now for 14 years. Their latest release came after a two hour teaser in the form of a loop via their website, eventually offering fans the chance to premier the track by searching through the sky for the Aquarius constellation via an app, in a bid to ‘encourage astronomy.’

This new music has been long-awaited, with no new Metronomy music having been released since the 2011 ‘English Riviera’ album.

I’m Aquarius’ is a minimal yet tuneful track, with simple, stripped down instrumental accompaniments, tinny, clicking percussion, and of course, the usual, trademark breathy and lulling vocals of Joseph Mount, backed by Anna Prior’s repetitive ‘Shoop-doop-doop-ahh’ throughout. The track progresses near the end, to include instrumental solos from other synths and piano sounds, which creates a full and complete, uplifting and inspiriting treasure.

I, for one, cannot wait to hear the long-awaited album ‘Love Letters’ due for release of March 10th 2014. Pre-order ‘Love Letters’ now and get ‘I’m Aquarius’ straight away, here.

Sounds like; Caribou, Miami Horror, Carousel, Hey Champ

Hellogoodbye – (Everything Is) Debatable

Hellogoodbye are back!

The Hellogoodbye boys rocketed to fame with former records such as ‘Here (In Your Arms)’ and ‘All Of Your Love’; both of which were taken from their 2006 hit album ‘Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!’.

The 7 years absence from our stereos appears to have treated the indie pop outfit well as they showcase the video for their new track ‘(Everything Is) Debatable’.

Despite continuing with the quotation mark theme within the title of the song, ‘(Everything Is) Debatable’ is a refined track full of synth pop and heartbroken lyrics. Hellogoodbye seemed to have grown up.

Their upcoming album ‘Everything Is Debatable’ is out now via Old Friends Records.

The boys continue their US tour with Paramore and Metric.

Sounds like: The 1975, Panic at the Disco, Passion Pit, Metric, Carousel, Small Pools

Carousel – Another Day

The San Fran electro-pop duo Carousel bring us a video for their new track, ‘Another Day’.

The humorous video follows a pool party gatecrasher in hot pursuit of an attractive blonde. The characters, that are controlled by a young girl, are based on the Ken and Barbie dolls, although Ken looks and acts suspiciously like Tom Cruise.

The Felipe Torres Urso-directed video cites a clear influence from L.A., following Carousel’s 2012 move there.

There are a limited 1,000 copies of the 7″ ‘Another Day’ vinyl for release on 12 November 2013. Pre order now from Old Friends Records.

Sounds like: Hey Champ, RAC, The Postal Service

Maps – A.M.A

James Chapman, aka Maps, is from Northampton, UK, and released his last album four years ago. He has since been working hard to create something wonderful, something perfect and something sure to be well-received; and he has certainly achieved this with third album, ‘Vicissitude’, released July 5th 2013 on Mute, and available to purchase here. ‘Vicissitude’ was recorded at Chapman’s home studio with production input from M83 collaborator Ken Thomas.

Lead track ‘A.M.A’ has a simple but dynamic drum loop, with sophisticated and intricate synth lines. The captivating melody progresses to an uplifting chorus and there are moments of solitude at times, progressing to determined elevation. Maps’ trademark shoegaze-synth sound and whispery vocals are certainly is still here showing throughout on ‘Vicissitude’, but A.M.A is a more refined, neater track from the LP. Listen below;

Sounds like;  Carousel, School of Seven Bells, Pet Shop Boys, Washed Out
