Mafalda – Goodbyes

Mafalda

We are loving the husky vocal tones of London-native Mafalda and brisk piano keys in her current single ‘Goodbyes’.

The beautifully constructed ballad is easily something you’d hear in the charts, possibly as a result of Mafalda’s recent work with UK and US based producers.

After a brief hiatus, Alexx Mack returns to our stereos with her latest release ‘Your Car’, featuring EXES.

Alexx took the year long break to rediscover herself and her music, and the break has done her good. The reformed sound is ruminating and lustrous, everything a modern, dark synth-pop song should be.

Low Island – The Lines

Low Island

Oxford quartet Low Island share the cleverly choreographed and colourful video for ‘The Lines’, which has a distinct 90’s vibe to it.

Florda Well – High Love

Florda Well

Meet Canada-based psych-pop band Florda Well.

Despite the deliciously boozy bass-lines and woozy vocals in ‘High’ that conjure up feelings of warm stoner summers, the song was written and recorded during the coldest and darkest part of the year, which is only a testament to Florda Well for their positive outlook.

Sounds like: Tame Impala, MGMT, Goldroom

MTNS – Waves

MTNS - Waves

Brisbane-based trio MTNS release ‘Waves’.

The electronic production reflects the title of the track as the bass lines roll over you like waves in the ocean…or much like positive and negative aspects of life hitting you one at a time.

MTNS say of the track, “‘Waves’ is about how we experience different stages in life, with a specific focus on relationships. It’s based on how love can help us overcome things, and work through the ups and downs we often find ourselves in.”

Expect their ‘Like A Stone’ EP out soon.

Billie Eilish – hostage

Billie Eilish

Exciting pop star, Billie Eilish shares her latest track called ‘hostage’.

It’s a stripped back song, but despite its all acoustic feel, and much like all of Billie’s music, there is a darker side, as she explains “”hostage” is a song that borders on and explores the unhealthy side of love. Billie points out “when you are so in love that you feel like you can’t be without them and you can’t see them with someone else. It is not a healthy feeling but I think everyone feels it at some point.”

Her “dont smile at me” EP is out now via Darkroom/Interscope Records and has been produced by Billie’s 19-year-old brother Finneas O’Connell.

Sounds like: Dua Lipa, Astronomyy, Ella Vos, Tempers, Charlotte Cardin

Alayna

Alayna

Introducing New Zealand born Alayna.

Reminiscent of a 90’s R&B chart topper (note key change at 2:15), but offering something modern at the same time, ‘Falling Autumn’ is about “finding the stillness and comfort in someone else…It’s about connecting with someone on a deeper level and being confident in what you want, crave and feel.”

IYES – Feelings

Original Brighton duo IYES make a surprise return with ‘Feelings’.

Now residing in Berlin, Josh Christopher and Melis Soyaslanova have begun their new musical journey together, taking more of a dance/electronic direction. The Berlin music scene has definitely shown its influence.

‘Feelings’ is a modern number, although surprisingly, the track was written in 2015. Following many re-works and versions, the pair decided to join forces with upcoming production duo Kilian and Jo to take the song to its maximum potential.

Billie Eilish – Bellyache

Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish

Following on from such an incredible debut must be difficult, but Billie Eilish is as tough as they come.

Her latest single is called ‘Bellyache’ and takes a more stripped back/acoustic approach. Billie wrote ‘Bellyache’ in her bedroom with frequent collaborator and older brother Finneas O’Connell who produced the track at the home they grew up in, in Los Angeles.

“When I write, I try to become different characters,” exclaims Billie. “You can write a song about being in love with someone, but you don’t have to be in love with anyone. You can write a song about killing someone, but you don’t have to have killed people. ‘Bellyache’ is about doing one of those things but it’s mostly about regret and guilt.” She continues. “Becoming a character can be really fun; to put yourself in a place you would never really be.”

Astronomyy – Into U

Astronomyy

Astronomyy

UK-based producer, Astronomyy, shares a dark version of ‘Into U’.

We don’t usually feature covers on Indietronica, but this is so different to the original by Ariana Grande, we had to include it.

The 26 year old has worked with the likes of Billie EilishMNEK and Zara Larsson, offering a variety of sounds, due to being raised on a heavy dose of 90’s – 2000’s pop & R&B, with equal measures of 60’s – 70’s rock, and everything in-between.

Sounds like: Aeble, James Blake, Active Child, SOHN, Lorde
