Nightshifts – Karma

Nightshifts

Nighshifts is the cosmic pop project of Toronto-based Andrew Oliver.

His new single ‘Karma’ is about not overthinking the future and sitting back to enjoy the ride, as expressed in the track’s nonchalant off-kilter vocal melody and breezy beats.

Argonaut & Wasp – Prove It To You

Argonaut & Wasp

We are big fans of Argonaut & Wasp‘s indie-dance tunes, so we are psyched they have a new single called ‘Prove It To You’.

Once again testifying their ability to produce something catchy, we just can’t get enough of the track’s slurry vocals and groovy sensibilities.

Sounds like: The Strokes, Modest Mouse, Talking Heads, Phoenix

Glassio – Daydream featuring NAKAYA

Glassio

Electronic duo Glassio are going from strength to strength with each release.

The latest addition to their catalogue, ‘Daydream’, is an ode to their love of early 2000s LA-based Hip/Hop & R&B, and features the delicate vocals of NAKAYA.

The guys says they “were imagining Dre and AIR making a record together”, although we think the vocal loops are more reminiscent of Gorillz‘ ‘Stylo’.

Sounds like: Gorillz, Hot Chip, Metronomy, Foals, Jagwar Ma, Rüfüs, Flume, Odesza, Bob Moses, Glass Animals, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs

Henry Green – Stay Here

Henry Green

Bristol-based rising star Henry Green shares his dark but ethereal new single ‘Stay Here’.

A lot of greatness comes from dark places, much like this single, which Henry wrote at the site of Berlin’s 1950’s broadcast facility, Köpenicker Chaussee, during a moment of frustration and loss of direction.

It’s out now via Akira Records.

Sounds like: Jon Hopkins, Erased Tapes, Olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm

Iris Lune – Lost In Chatter

Iris Lune

Brooklyn-based art pop quartet Iris Lune share ‘Lost In Chatter’.

Clever percussion throughout depicts chatter overlaid by synth-led harmonies and more of a dance-inspired melody, lyrically inspired by the final chapter of Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice In Wonderland’.

Sounds like: Little Dragon, Deerhoof, Björk, Σtella

Au/Ra – Outsiders

Au/Ra

Growing up in the middle of nowhere has been the source of songwriting influence for Au/Ra‘s new single, ‘Outsiders’, not only because of her location growing up in Antigua, but also because of her introverted nature.

But this song is a call to arms for all misfits, giving them a chance to escape to a fantasy world.

She plays The Waiting Room in London on 13 November.

Sounds like: Florence + The Machine, Dua Lipa, Charli XCX, The Magnettes

Madeleine Rosenthal – No One’s Gonna Save You

Madeleine Rosenthal - No One's Gonna Save You

Despite being from Los Angeles, Madeleine Rosenthal has a distinct British sound to her electronic music, similar to James Blake.

Her debut single is case in point. It’s a track about Madeleine cutting ties with someone who has been holding her back.

Sounds like: Air, Jorja Smith, London Grammar, Massive Attack, James Blake, Maggie Rogers

One Week Wonder – Free As A Bird

One Week Wonder

Iceland has a reputation for producing some magical and forward-thinking music.

However, there is something quite familiar about ‘Free As A Bird’ by trio, One Week Wonder. It might be because of the serious Pink Floyd sounds going on, or the fact that member, Arni was a founding member of Of Monsters And Men and Helgi was a touring member of Asgeir’s live band.

Put the kettle on, sit back and listen to the sweet twangs of folktronica and velvety vocals on the track.

Sounds like: Neil Young, Pink Floyd, Air, Tame Impala, Of Monsters And Men, David Bowie

TENDER – Cut

Tender

Tender

Following on from the brilliant ‘Lost’ by TENDER is the new single, and the third release taken from their new forthcoming ‘EPII’ EP, called ‘Cut’.

Straightforward track titles do not reflect a simplistic attitude by the duo. Quite the opposite. This is complex, dark pop that features expansive cinematic synths and aims to hypnotise.

‘EPll’ will be released on 12 February.

Watch this space for live shows.

Sounds like: MOTHXR, Jungle, Glass Animals, HUNTAR, Caribou, Air, The National, Tame Impala, Boxed In

Sia – Elastic Heart (feat. The Weeknd and Diplo)

SIA

SIA

Australian singer/songwriter, Sia teams with The Weeknd and Diplo for ‘Elastic Heart’.

‘Elastic Heart’ is your usual catchy track from Sia with a bit of added soul from The Weeknd (aka Abel Tesfaye) and some neat production from Diplo.

The video is pretty querky and follows a Sia impersonator recovering from a breakup, and eventually climaxes with the ultimate f-you at the end.

‘Elastic Heart’ appears on the soundtrack for ‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’, due out on 19 November 2013.

Sounds like: Ellie Goulding, Air, Zero 7, The Weeknd, Doll and the Kicks

Keep Shelly In Athens – Recollection

Keep Shelly in Athens

Grecian duo Keep Shelly in Athens and Cascine put forward ‘Recollection’, which was released on 16th July 2013. It is the first mainstream single from the band’s debut album, ‘At Home’, set for release on 17th September 2013.

Keep Shelly in Athens is producer RΠЯ, who constructs the music along a framework of auroral, driving breaks, and Sarah P. who twines the material with provocative, dream-inducing vocals.

‘Recollection’ feels less adulterated than ‘Madmen Love’, but still gives you the exhilarating burst of awakening whilst sinking deeper into a vast and calm underwater world of beauty and transience.

July is going to be a good month for the duo, but September is going to be even better.

Sounds like: Solar Bears, Purity Ring, Air

Goldfrapp – Drew

goldfrapp2

London-based electronic duo Goldfrapp have just revealed lead song ‘Drew’ from their highly anticipated album ‘Tales of Us’ due out 9th September 2013 on Mute, available for preorder here . ‘Drew’ is a wonderfully cinematic folktronica track with a hint of jazz / swing, and a beautiful black and white short film depicting what appears to be a heart-wrenching memory of past love ending in a contrary love affair within the confined walls of a huge, peaceful, country house. The film is a taster from filmmaker Lisa Gunning’s feature film creation due out later this year to accompany the Goldfrapp new album.

Goldfrapp are Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory; veterans of the genre indietronica having formed back in 1999 during the tail end of the Trip Hop era.

Sounds like: Air, Lana Del Rey, Marina & the Diamonds
